Hi, I'm an architect in the UK and about to start a residence project in Guelph, Ont. Perhaps all those Canadian architects can enlighten me to whether they use metric or imperial? Also, if anyone knows what the approx. cost of construction ($/sq.ft.) is for residential contracts in the area?
Can't talk to the costs in that part of the country, but imperial is used. The only exception is official Federal projects which will be SI. Keep in mind, that trades, suppliers, manufacturers, etc. with very few exceptions still operate with English units however.
is the project a single family residence? or a larger project? if so..i would double check the units with the municipality.. i haven't done a project specifically in guelph but ive done many multi-unit residential projects from london, to ottawa... all of which requested our drawings in METRIC.
sometimes as stupid as it is - we use imperial sizes but indicate them in metric dimension. So eventhough a door is 3' wide, we'll dimension it as 914mm.
often we will spec metric brick to coordinate with metric size CMU's.. and the contractor will come back with imperial alternatives that the owners approve.. then all of the coursing is messed up and we have either have bricks everywhere or thick mortar joints... ugh!!
