"adaptive reuse"

dsc_arch

Outside architecture circles no one knows what "adaptive reuse" is. What is a good dumbed down term for it?

upcycling the built environment?

building reuse or building recycling maybe? If you add building in there it will give them direction. Then you can give an example like: turning a paper mill into artist lofts and studio apartments or a warehouse into a gym

dsc, here's an example for you; tell them that when their local strip mall converted to a ghost town, because the Circuit City went belly up, that you can reuse the existing big box failure, and adapt it to a community clinic, that will serve HIV/AIDS patients in the community.

"adaptive reuse" is a bit redundant anyway, right? how about:

adaptive building use
building core reuse
architectural retrofit
re-purposed building design

building conversion
building adaptation

According to Douglas 2006, Building Adaptation, there are several terms depending on the level of intervention and risk of obsolescence (fa spectrum between maintenance and reconstruction):

Preservation (arrest decay)
Conservation (preserve purposefully)
Refurbishment (facelift/ makeover)
Rehabilitation (modernize)
Renovation (upgrade)
Remodeling (improve/ extend)
Restoration (bring back)
Demolition

I agree with rsiii, most people will know the terms, 'rehab' and 'renovate'; mostly from watching hgtv.

I wish we were. We are holding on right now -albeit by a wing and prayer. We are surviving mainly because of existing contacts and the that we build most of our remodeling projects for our clients.

We have seen a lot of carnage in our area over the past year. we are focusing on our niche. remodeling and redevelopment of existing buildings, i n our area, requires an architect.

good luck tinydancer.

After reading excerpts from the BUILDING ADAPTATION book listed above (great book BTW) We have settled on the following tag-line: refurbish, remodel, redevelop. We had to dumb it down - way down -- after talking with many clients who got lost on the redevelopment - but got refurbish.

go figure.
