Thesis Project in need of precedents of similar program?
I am beginning my thesis project very soon, I have been thinking about this for a while I am trying hard to be more precise about what exactly my thesis is. I want to design a model for block redevelopment in Baltimore, MD, that incorporates green community goals (live, work, play) and would really foster community re-birth. Instead of just filling in the blocks with solely residential.
There are hundreds of blighted and abandoned blocks all over the city which the re-developed ones have either been turned into high-rise luxury condos or new row homes with no commercial or community programming for blocks, which according to Jane Jacobs who I am basing many of my ideas around, knows this will ultimately lead to cycling back to what it is today a dead zone.
I was wondering if anyone out there had some good suggestions of projects similar to this idea. That have been successful or not, and are well documented. I haven't been having very much luck finding well documented projects, which I think is probably just because Im not sure what category exactly this fits in?
I did a short presentation about Charles Village in Baltimore last semester. Is that the type of development you're looking for? I had the same problem trying to find documentation of its success or failure. Most information I found was factual or promotional. However, since it was a short project that I only had to work on for about a week I wasn't required to heavily research what resources might have been available, though. I think it might be an interesting project for you to look further into. It's right in the heart of Baltimore and was intended to be a major redevelopment project for Johns Hopkins and surrounding community. It was also a public-private partnership between the city and Canyon Johnson Urban Funds (a venture of Magic Johnson's).
have you looked into the urban redevelopment UPenn did in west philadelphia? i believe Rodin (then the pres) wrote a book about it. not EXACTLY what youa re looking for, but instead of razing houses and buildng fancy ones they tried to kick out the drug dealers, keep housing relatively affordable, fix up older houses, and they built a school for the neighborhood, and maybe a park? look into it...might lead to you to other better examples.
