LOR Problem: Work after graduation

cfso1952

I am debating between applying to M.Arch I in my senior year or trying to work for 2, 3 years for a structural engineering firm (preferably) then apply. I am ok to stay in Canada (Univ of Toronto or UBC) but if I were to go to US, I do want to go to the best schools ( GSD, MIT, etc) so the money and cost can be worthwhile.

I am pretty set for architecture after finishing the intro program at GSAPP.

My problem is that how can I obtain letters of recommendations after being out of school for 2,3 years? My profs will probably forget who I am and I hate the idea of letting my employer to write the letter. Is going to night-school the only option for getting good LORs?

Simple: maintain a relationship with your professors post graduation.

I maintained a relationship with three of my favorite professors as a source of mentorship once I graduated. Our communication wasn't too frequent (maybe 4 - 6 times a year) but was enough to stay up-to-date with jobs, competitions, interesting projects, new book recommendations, etc. This allowed for zero awkwardness when I called them up four years later to write my letters of recommendation for graduate school.

what n_ said.
When I graduated I took few years off working at an office. During my work I maintained a relationship with all the faculty, sat in their mid and final reviews, went out, got their opinions on other issues etc. even went back a few times to show them improvements I made on project that I did when I had them as studio professors. When it came down to applying to schools they knew exactly who I was and were more than willing to write my letters. In addition to that I had my principal write recommendations too.
