I didn’t apply, but toyed with the idea for a while. I just got engaged, so if the best case scenario occurred, it would have taken a big toll on my personal life.
Anyone apply? What where your research objectives and travel plans?
The Foundation said that the winners would be announced August 7th. However, it's getting pretty late in the day for an announcement, so I'm highly confused.
I applied (which now has me on edge because it still hasn't been announced!) but my research plans involved studying the studio environment in terms of designer adaptability. I had several academic studio environments and professional studios in North America, Northern Europe, and Western Europe.
My goal was to observe, document and analyze the studio, its "campus" context, and its context in the urban or surrounding environment. I think studio environments are often forgotten about as places of true impact on education of designers, and my goal is to expose the relationship there.
SOOO.... I'm still waiting to hear. I'll let you know when and if I do!
more like a timely geo-political synthesis with a legitimately interesting topic.........hyper-dense, not so much. are they going to talk about slums? and how awesome they are? good grief.
What does that mean, "practicality in a SOM Fellow"? Are you saying the recipients are unworthy because they aren't studying flashing details in Omaha?
Not at all. I'm sure they're "worthy" of the prize, I only meant that I see so much possibility in the SOM Fellowship, that I would like to see the "research" done during the fellowship approach a "problem" from a true systematic research standpoint... as opposed to a more abstract exploration of the topic.
I'm very interested in Evidence Based Design and the potential impacts it has on the field, and the SOM Prize would be an incredible opportunity to execute some really great research in that manner.

SOM Prize
has anyone heard anything about when the winners for the SOM prize are being announced? Do they let everyone know? Thanks!
August 17 or 19th. Something like that.

I'm guessing they received a larger than usual applicant pool this year given the amount of recent graduates who are unemployed.
Got the letter today. (didn't win) 112 people applied from 43 different schools, only 12 more ppl than last year surprisingly.
Viktor Ramos, M. Arch, Rice University - SOM Prize to study "Solutions for a Small Planet: Exploring the Hyper-Dense"
Parsa Khalili, M. Arch, Yale University - SOM Travel Fellowship to study "In Search of an Iranian Modernism"
Someone from Rice and someone from Yale! Wow! Surprise of the century!

I had hopes for practicality in a SOM Fellow.... and sadly, I'm still looking.
my application was about used tires.
