I've never seen any shop drawings done in Illustrator before but the employer I interviewed recently does that. Actually he asked me if I could do that on Illustrator. Now how much does it make sense to do those drawings in Illustrator? He doesn't have CAD program, well I do.Isn't CAD a better, faster and more efficient way to do that? Then I could open the file on Illustrator and edit the file,do the renderings etc.
Doesn't make sense. Look forward to much aggrevation.
However, it's not suprising. I've received floor plans in MS excel. The client set the cell outlines and fills to make plans... And about once or twice a year I receive a file with an obsucre/unknown file extension.
Well he designs lights and signs.Small stuff but they are still detailed and you need to put dimensions, title blocks and they have to be on scale. Should I enlighten him about this issue?
i compile working drawings in illustrator at times because it reverse engineers Pdfs better
where rhinoceros can do that too but not exact with the text
I think a lot of signage / environmental graphics firms work in illustrator, but when it comes to drawing details and dimenioning, it doesn't make much sense. You can draw dimensioned drawings much faster in CAD... On the otherhand, Illustrator now seamlessly works with CAD files, you can open .DWGs in illustrator and export illustrator vector graphic to .DWG so I see no issue with using both together when you need different tools...
Shop drawings in Illustrator??

Sounds crazy to me.
Are you interviewing with contractors or an architecture firm? Do you mean construction documents, or actual shop drawings?
Either way, doesn't sound like an efficient way to draw details.

Revit's drafting "tools" make it seem like I'm drawing details in Illustrator/Photoshop... clunky & imprecise...
I hate when our consultants give us illustrator files when we need CAD files!

vectors for exporting to either cnc cut or vynle cut/plot
CADtools plug-in for illustrator -> https://www.hotdoor.com/cadtools
If you like illustrator, it's pretty awesome.
For signs I can see everything being done in Illustrator. For lights, I would rather have the tools of ACAD to work with.

there is a drafting plug-in for illustrator...
i just got my hands on CADtools for illustrator. although I haven't had a chance to use it yet
plus Rhinoceros reads and writes eps ai pdf in and out too
For starters, there's no such thing as "cad."
Yes, the plugins for Illustrator work fine and are much more adept to making graphics and signage than Autocad ever will be.
