I am in my final yr of graduation...completing my b.arch and i intend to apply to grad schools in US for the coming fall. i have good sketching and visualisation skills and moderate software skills...but have only 1140 in GRE.
I am currently interning under a famous architect (and m getting to wrk with him personally)...so i shud manage a good reco frm him other than my school faculty...he also happens to be a passout of upenn himself and has taught there for quite a long time and has wrked world over.my GPA is easily over 3 as per US standards...m frm india though so we calculate our GPA out of 10 and mine has been over an 8.2 on avg...
I will be applying to upenn, uiuc, cal berkely for sure...
all advise on what a good portfolio shud have and wht my chances for admission can be...and how I shud direct myself at this point of time...(I will probably give GRE again!) are welcome
I second msmit106's point. I also received an 1140 on the gre and had no problems getting admitted to top grad schools with a 3.23 gpa.
GRE and GPA are generally considered less important than the portfolio, statement of intent, and recommendations. By far the most important is your portfolio. The ivies (Penn) I would think are more concerned with undergraduate grades and GRE, but if you've got a famous recommended with ties to Penn it sounds like you've got some positive momentum...good luck
I applied to the University of Texas at Austin, SCI-Arc, University of Southern California, Pratt Institute, UCLA, and Parsons New School of Design.
I was accepted at Texas, SCI-Arc, USC, and Pratt. I got placed on wait-lists at Parsons and UCLA, from which I withdrew because I received admittance to my top 2 programs (Texas and SCI-Arc).
This fall I will begin graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
Good luck, around this time last year I was planning school visits/researching programs, and re-tooling old projects for my portfolio. The 3 schools you mentioned all have strong reputations and if I could go back, I would have probably applied to Berkeley and Penn myself. Applying to 5 or 6 schools I think is a pretty good number so do your research and maybe add a few schools to your list.
raadhika, I've been out of school for three years and am working in the wonderful world of architecture since! :)
Back when I was applying I applied to 10 grad programs and got into half of them, got wait-listed from a few, and then declined by a few. My GRE scores were definitely lower than 1140!

check out the Commiserate threads. those have a bunch of portfolio examples and advice and banter.
thanks a lot! :)
although it is not a bad idea to retake the gre, 1140 is not a bad score especially with a good gpa.
