the NO MORE MJ thread

treekiller

He's dead - get over it. His music from the past decade sucked. So why do must there be 24-7 'coverage' of his funerary rites?

There are more important things happening in the world that are being ignored in this media feeding frenzy.

Hey, Farrah still had her real nose - so why don't we get the same level of coverage of her funeral?

look. media coverage of celebrities are mostly based on demand. people whine about paris/britney/whomever coverage running amuck, but the truth is if people didn't want to see it, it wouldn't be there. media coverage of such events has little to do with the people being featured, but is rather a mirror of our own culture's insatiable demands and standards.

MJ's fame, even at his demise, is (at least) two-fold. 1) he rose to stardom through sheer pop-talent/incredible performances and gave birth to tons of follow-up acts and 2) EVERYONE knows MJ. if you're 4 years old, 14, 40 or 140, you knew MJ. if you lived in america, afghanistan, libya, russia, poland, the goddamn moon, you knew MJ.

farrah carried aspects of stardom that may have lasted until today, but her fame paled in comparison. i personally knew OF her, and like many, was sad for her illness, but i personally don't have a single childhood memory in which her presence played a role, nor have i watched an entire film she was in.

i actually think it's a blessing. i'd rather see MJ tributes on various news channels then be fed lies and bigotry concerning world politics any day. i had essentially stopped watching television until his death and once coverage of his death ends, i'll go back to that.

News is not entertainment for the masses. News is about providing information that is critical to be an informed citizenry - we're a democracy, not a popularity contest. This is part of why we got into this economic mess - folks were being distracted by pap like MJ's death. If being ignorant like Sarah Palin is a virtue then, then we're all screwed.

If I want entertainment, I'll check out TMZ, not CNN.

I totally agree with you here, but MJ's death coverage (or celeb coverage of any kind) is hardly the culprit for why the news has left us as uninformed citizens.

While I agree with you, reality is that American news television, has become geared towards entertainment and ratings. While they serve news they also market themselves. Which means appeal to the general public.

"is rather a mirror of our own culture's insatiable demands and standards."

Yep. TMZ is a perfect analogy for what LA is today.

also, regardless of what anyone thought of him personally, you cant deny his popularity as a musician
its as close to a modern day "Beatles" that we will get really

I am surprised anyone is surprised at the coverage and how much people care
Where have you been for the past 20-30 years to not think Michael Jackson dying would be a big deal?

Jul 8, 09 5:59 pm  ·

b3tadine[sutures]

marm, you know what, the problem is no one talks about the MJ and the Music, all anyone is interested in is MJ the Spectacle. one look at the cast of hangers on, has beens, and ridiculous morbid seeking Public, is testament enough to that fact.

Jul 8, 09 6:21 pm  ·

really? I actually have been seeing the opposite in what little i have watched.

It seems everyone has forgiven anything that they have been destroying him for for the past 10-15 years and have focused on him being just a brilliant musician

A lot of people who seemed to turn their back on him after his star faded as a musician (at least in the US) are all now coming out and saying how he was the greatest thing ever, like they havent been making fun of him and ridiculing him for so long

but i do agree with you though about the spectacle of it all and how it is ridiculous

Jul 8, 09 6:24 pm  ·

b3tadine[sutures]

marm, i see your point, but i guess the Spectacle trying to embrace the Musician, reveals the truth? behind the fallacy??

oh it certainly does

i feel bad for him actually
he got crapped on for 20 years, now people are claiming they have loved him forever

all that said, i do enjoy hearing his music played a lot more now

I was never a die-hard fan, but i do enjoy it

bye bye bayou

it's times like these when i'm glad i don't have cable.

i seem to be one of the few people that seems agrees with you on this blog. i respect his talent and his contribution and think he deserve a great amount of press coverage(even though i have honestly never been huge fan of him or his music but that's probably because he was a little before my time) but i think it's time to give it a rest. there are some really important things going on in the world right now.

before his death the election protest in iran were all over the news and now i can only find a few stories about the latest news in iran. although it my just be the arrogance of the western media, but it seemed like just the coverage of the situation was a huge help to the protesters. but sense MJ's death, i haven't heard hardly anything about what is going on and i wonder if the lack of coverage has effected the situation? maybe not, but either way, i don't think the story should be taking second stage to MJ for this long.

Jul 8, 09 9:43 pm  ·
 ·
marmkid

wait, you dont have cable yet you are blaming the media for putting Iran second behind MJ?
how do you know they are only covering MJ and not anything else then?

it honestly has not been that long since he died, i really dont see the big deal

Steve McNair and his murder/suicide from his 20 year old girlfriend is also taking up news
lets start complaining about that on archinect as well

now if this is all still going on a month from now, ok i can see something wrong
but it has actually died down a bit already, and it does not dominate the entire news shows anymore

besides, who is to say that your chosen topic of Iran or anyone else's preferred topic is more deserving?

and I agree with marmkid's last point...

WHO DECIDES WHAT TOPIC IS MORE DESERVING ?

Iran & A blackman that shaped pop culture.... disect the fucking news, and you might get somewhere...

Iran would have faded from the headlines with or without MJ. Even NPR isn't talking about Iran anymore and they never went crazy with MJ coverage the way cable news did. People's attention span for such international news is short and without major developments they're likely to lose interest. People just don't care about the minor details or the backstory enough to sustain coverage for weeks. Iran got about a week of coverage and unfortunately that's about the best we can expect.

exactly
which is why if this really bothers some people, posting on archinect does absolutely nothing

if you feel that strongly about it, you need to go to these new sources and let them know how you feel

otherwise it is just pointless internet ranting

marmkid

geez! what's with the hostility?! although i don't have cable, it's obvious that i have access to the internet and i do check CNN and other new's sites frequently. i guess really what i meant by "all over the news" is that the his death seemed to be dominating the head lines. and for that first maybe four or five days that, that is completely understandable, but after a week, i would like to some to see some other stories on the front page besides exclusively MJ's death. that was really my point. i got annoyed by it but it would appear that i'm in the minority.

but steve mcnair? were did that come form? of course that story deserves to be all over the new especially considering his death was only a few days before his my first post!
