Has anyone read:
The Portfolio and the Diagram: Architecture, Discourse, and Modernity in America by Hyungmin Pai?
There is a review on JSAH but I wondered if any more casual thoughts are floating around. I'm looking for a good history of diagramming practices, bubble diagrams, etc.

I've seen Google Books limited preview of it - they show enough that you can audit it yourself.
i haven't read the book...but i did check it out on google books and i don't think that it is what you seek.
i would recommend Simon Unwin's LeCorbusier: An Analysis of Form. or for bubble diagrams, you might look at Edward T. White's books.
sorry...make that Geoffery H. Baker's book: Le Corbusier: an analysis of form.
