I have applied to several schools this Fall to obtain a Masters of Architecture I . After the rejections, waiting lists, and etc. I am left with my safety school: City University of New York. They were my safety school for a reason: their literature only had one mention of sustainability.
I desire to be at a school that focuses more on that aspect of architecture. I was taught the ideals of passive solar and permaculture at a very young so the idea of sustainability is crucial to my academia. Should I trust they will incorporate sustainability into their program by the sheer prevalence of green ideals in the industry?
What do people think of CUNY in general? Should I try to get more experience in sustainable architecture and apply again in a year or two? I don't want to rush anything but I did want to start this Fall. What's a boy to do!
Hey Jef, I am kind of in the same boat... I applied to Albany for their Masters in Regional Planning program and hope to take a few Green/Sustainable Architecture courses at the Rensselaers Polytechnic Institute because I want to hopefully get my MArch after I graduate... CCNY is so much more affordable than other Architecture programs but like you I was hesitant because of the lack of sustainable design courses... I would hope in a year or 2 from now when I apply there they get with the program and realize that sustainable development is something that should be taught in the curriculum... Getting some sustainable Architecture courses under your belt is probably a smart move before entering the program, or since you wanted to start this fall go to CCNY and than later down the line you can take a class or 2 at another institution for sustainable architecture... Was it difficult to get into CCNY's program? I have my BA in environmental planning with no real art background so I dont know how competitive my portfolio will be, one I make one... does anyone know how I can compare what portfolios look like for graduate school applicants so I can base my decision of if mine will suck or not on it?
I've heard various things about what gets people into MArch programs. I guess it is whatever the faculty sees in your presentation of skills that they would want to work with...I believe creativity and the skills necessary to be adept at architecture can be shown in many different ways. I guess you need to just put your best work forward, whatever it is and hope they see something they can work with....
That being said I have spent the last two months trying to get over the hurt of my primary school putting me on the waiting list. I've just about made a decision of how to direct my life after months of planning...gonna go in a completely different direction....and then I get an email today saying they are taking me off the waiting list and want me to come study there...wtf!!!
I love NYC but in terms of affordability and city/state schools, there is also SUNY Buffalo that offers a MArch 1. And I hear Buffalo isn't too bad...Something to think about
What kinds of stuff did you do with environmental planning?
