i'd second that recommendation for adaware and send you to download.com to get it.

get adaware then get zonealarm... zonealarm is free for a trial period but its totally worth it to buy if you don't have a good firewall at the idc you are going to be hacked to pieces

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3 (Freeware does the job) it's what I use.

I use ZoneAlarm for my firewall, Spybot and Adaware for spyware.

I have had one nasty critter get by all those and corrupt my registry, so nothign is 100% safe. I had to delete things out of my registry, via some helpful guy's recommendations, but I was prepared to lose the entire system.

Neither Spybot, Adaware or Zonealarm can remove a highjacked homepage (when the browser continously sets the start page to a bogus search engine), or other kinds of 'Krueger-ware'

Only effective cure is a small program called HighjackThis. It basically shows a list of processes running on the system, and then you can choose which ones to delete.

I succeed removing the highjacked page by restarting the system in safemode. Then run the program, and delete everything that looks like spyware. (Sometimes they try to camouflage the files so they look like important system files, so it can be tricky....)

it depends on how much stuff you have. I run a search with Spybot and Adaware at least once a week and I'd say it takes about 5-10 minutes for each one to find the stuff, then a minute or two more to delete it.

does someone know how tho get rid of this Lycos sidesearch thing? it appears every time I do a search in whatever page and its damn slow and I can do nothing 'til it has downloaded all the damn search .. its driving me mad!

Medit - you should be able to go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the Lycos thing. I've had that damn thing before, but managed to kill it.

i would suggest a combination of spybot/adaware and then running a scan with hijackthis after
u could go for help in the forums in www.helponthe.net and these really helpful guys will run u thro wht u need to do.

I have found for really tough to remove malware programs it works best to run both Spybot and Adaware on your system while booted to “SAFE MODE”.
