It's an architect's right of passage. Doing your first mansard. It goes along with doing your first odd angle (other than 15,30,45,etc. degrees) and doing your first radius elements. The beauty with these rights of passage is that you learn how difficult it is to do them well and after its finished, you'll wish you would have waited until you were a more mature architect to try them.
a bad mansard roof is the one where they continue the vertical members from below up through the top (to increase SF in the upper units), and it looks like a little hat or something from super mario bros.
