so now that ellen dunham jones has 'officially' announced she will be stepping down as chair at georgia tech (to concentrate on her research and get back to teaching), who should the school put forward as a nominee to lead them into the future?
btw - those who know, chris jarrett is out. he's moving on to unc charlotte next year as the chair of that department.
new people in both ellen's and chris' positions?! I 'm hoping they get someone in chris' place who can add more sustainability to the program. but i hadn't heard about ellen!

well, george johnston will take over the grad programs on an interim basis. no word on who will take over undergrad programs, but it looks like we'll have a split directorship while a search gets underway.
my personal hope is they look outside the current walls - it's always difficult to promote from within. in a way, they could benefit from someone coming in to shake things back up a bit.
I agree that Sabir Khan would be an excellent choice. He's extremely bright (probably one of the smartest and most articulate people I know), and knows the school at all levels well (being an associate dean and a professor.) He was responsible for many of the changes at the undergraduate level especially retooling the first year curriculum. Also he has an interesting background and is very charismatic - all good things for a chair position.
As a recent (less than a week) graduate of the M.Arch program at tech I would say the opposite. Ellen was a very nice lady, but I'm not sure she was the best director for tech.
With Balfour in as Dean, things have changed...for the better...and I believe that they will continue to do so. Additionally, I don't feel this position will be filled internally, Balfour knows the direction he wants to take the school and I am almost certain he has a few replacements in mind.
Sabir would be a good choice, he would take a bullet for Ga Tech and is a brilliant professor and has done wonders for the undergraduate program. So, if he is selected, it will be good.
odee, as a not so recent graduate of the program, i'm curious- how have things changed with balfour as dean? what direction would you say he's leading the school towards? i know these questions are not easy to answer, but i'm very fond of gatech and like to keep up with what's going on in the school.

my guess is that it will be an outside appointment... if i was going to put money on an internal appointment i'd probably bet on sabir khan...
