Including Arch stuff in MArch 1 Portfolio?

Sbeth85

Hi All-

I've heard that one should NOT include architecture in a portfolio if you're applying for the MArch I (no prior experience.)

In my case, however, I'm almost done with a year of Arch school in the Middle East, and by the time I apply will be done with 1.5 years. I feel that I've produced the best work possible, given the quality of the program. It's because of this dearth that I wish to return to the US for an M.Arch I.

I was thinking of including all my sketches and diagrams leading up to the final results, so they could see my thought process. One of the projects was to do a restaurant, the other a private house. These are both very small, modest buildings, suitable to the scope of the course.

So- would including all the sketches prove that I'm a thinking, creative person that would flourish in an M.Arch curriculum, given the chance?

Or will they see these projects as being sub-standard to their current admissions criteria?

I am NOT planning on applying for Advanced Placement, I want to start from scratch.

I am worried about what I'd include if not these drawings documenting my creative process- everything else I have if fine arts stuff from when I was in high school. Whaddy'all think?

if you have some architecture schooling and it shows up elsewhere on your application, it would look weird to not include it in your portfolio.

I agree with maxpower. If they see that you have significant architecture schooling, then they would probably want to have an idea of your potential given your prior architecture experience. In any case, you suggest your stuff is brilliant, so it shouldn't hurt to include it.

Now, contrary to the OP, I haven't had any architecture schooling and was considering teaching myself so I could make some plans before sending my portfolio in later this year, but then realized it wasn't a good idea for obvious reasons.

I have some cool ideas for buildings but am not so sure how to make architectural designs for them yet. So would including drawings/paintings/models of building "ideas" (and leaving out the architectural plans) be advisable or not?

Thanks.

i didn't mean my stuff was brilliant, but i think it's amongst the best in my class. but that isn't saying a lot, since i'm basically in the equivalent of an Associates/Architectural Technologist program.

In my opinion (not like i'd know!) you could do impressions of the buildings you would like to design... but not concrete plans. metaphorical representations of what you're thinking of...
