Rhino Newbie questions

gonad

First, Is there a way to convert many polysurfaces to a solid?

I have a fairly complex faceted building form. So far, i found it easy to just model this with polylines and either extrude the closed polyline or patch it (although extruding doesn't always work, it doesn't let me cap it off sometimes so i mostly have been using patch).
Does Rhino also let you divide up those surface into a particular number of segments, which then you can extrude a curve along? I'm trying to get an idea of how to model this structure...

I'd like to also import the overall form into revit as a mass and just applying walls by face for more fast and accurate plan work (sorry i dont have time to learn visualarq)

Any suggestions or comments?

i found the same problem, rhino let u divide the surfaces evenly but not let u insert an isocurve to specific location on the surface.... there is an extract isocurve, but the curve is detached afterward.

Ah. Is there a way to combine multiple surfaces? Havent tried this yet (at work), but would an add/join boolean work?

usually CTRL+J works to join multiple surfaces (as well as curves) into one object--once this is complete you can use the solid editing tools on it.

next question:

currently using (against my will) autocad architectural desktop 2009 to for drawings using smart walls, etc. in autocad this produces 3D information.

is there anyway to get that autocad model to export to rhino? autocad sucks as a modeling program, but the smart walls would give me a good running start. so far, the only way I can get any file from autocad 2009 with smart walls into rhino is as an .eps. everything else crashes.

Rhino can open .dwg files, if it doesn't seem to be handling the default 2007 version (make sure the latest service release has been applied too) , save down to R2000--this should get rid of most of the "smart" stuff which is probably what is causing the problem--also take out any extraneous objects like points and text before trying to open it in Rhino.

Are you doing this to model, or for creating renderings? If it's the latter you'd be better off importing the linework only and modeling only what the camera sees…

yeah... good old autocad.

i can explode and save down to 2000 to get it into rhino, but then that sort of defeats the purpose of trying to get part of the model already done.

oh well. billable hours.

Revit actually works much better for this--the dwgs it saves are actually polysurfaces and directly editable…

yeah well you use what your provided

orbit to 3d then export and you will get the model, but you will likely have to remake it because ADT makes very bad low quality mesh

for smart walls doors windows you could always use visualarq.com's plugin

Gonadsxe and Aspect: have you tried using the 'InsertControlPoint' command? This allows you to place a control point exactly where you pick..... There is also the 'InsertKnot' command. However, this command doesn't place the point exactly where you pick.
