Geoffrey Bawa / Ena de Silva House / Demolition

Perhaps Bawa's masterpiece of his career - currently scheduled for demolition early April 2009, to be used (from what I gather being here) as a car-park for an adjoining hospital. Purely ridiculous. At least efforts are being made to save it at the last moment as noted in the article, though I doubt the appropriateness in the choice of siting and of the quality reconstruction.

We've contacted DOCOMOMO international, but they weren't much help.

Read the local paper here:

My friend and I managed to convince the maid to let us in the courtyard for a bit while the owners were out. Incredibly beautiful.

What a shame it is this country puts all its efforts into the war-machine and doesn't give a damn about it's culture. Piss...

By the way, if anyone is around the city, the house will be open to the public 26 March from 10-6 or so. Unfortunately, I have to go to Pondicherry tomorrow...
