The first Pecha Kucha Night in Minneapolis/St. Paul is here!!
It’s Friday, April 17th. The week is over and you’ve found just the event to start the weekend off right. Around you are architects, fashion designers, musicians, illustrators, students; anyone with a passion for raw creativity. You’re halfway through a beer and the event is about to begin. The lights are dimmed, the screen is lit up, and you can feel the tension in the air as the first presentation begins…
We’re thrilled to see the Twin Cities become part of the fabric of Pecha Kucha Nights everywhere. From Nagano to Fresno and Gothenburg to Luxemburg, PKN has found its way from Tokyo to over 170 locations around the globe. London boasts the largest event with 1500 people as part of their London Architecture Biennale. Past presenters have included anyone from world renowned architects, to students, graphic designers, businessmen and even children.
We are still seeking submissions for presenters and will be doing so until April 6th. Ideas could be inventive, inspirational, informative… anything to get our creative juices flowing. Past Pecha Kucha Nights have included topics such as the repair culture of cellular phones, explorations in gardening, food design and home-made tattoos. Quite often portfolios are presented, but by no means should you limit yourselves to that. In Frankfurt there was a thrilling presentation about an abandoned German prison, which only seemed fitting as that was the location of the event itself! The strength of a PKN is in the variety of ideas mixed with the fast paced nature of an open-mic. night.
Are you a student with a project ready for serious attention or a traveler interested in sharing your latest adventure? Are you an entrepreneur with the next big idea or a software developer ready to launch? Do you simply get into new ideas and are ready to be inspired? Jonas, you owe an apology for how MPR and this thing is being promoted. There have been several Pecha Kucha groups working in the TC for years now, and while I'm excited for your program and hope you succeed, billing it as the first in the cities is both misleading and angering.
Again, congrats on the start up, I'm sure my old city will react to it with a lot of enthusiasm, but you owe Northern Lights, Darwin Day, the U of M, and most importantly Solutions Twin Cities (a group that has been doing this format continuously for 2 years now) an apology.
SuperBeatledud,
We spoke with Solutions a while back to discuss both our events, their similarities and their differences. It is unfortunate that MPR wrote that we were the only group doing this sort of thing in the area -it was not our intension to suggest that.
We've already reached out to Solutions to find out about their next event to help promote it at ours. There is another group called Ignite that we've reached out to as well. Its exciting that other people have seen the need to bring new ideas to this area, and we're interested in helping them succeed as well.
thanks for the heads up.
