Average GRE scores

http://www.iupui.edu/~philosop/gre.htm

I found this link while searching for stuff on the GRE on Google.

It says the average scores for architecture majors from 2001-04 are as follows:

V: 477 Q: 614 A: 4.3

Do those numbers sound about right for a "decent" score to apply for an M. Arch? I'm taking the test May 1st so I'm just curious what a "good" or "bad" score would be.

I was a Math major from 94-98, and an Architecture major from 99-02, so I haven't really used basic "high school" math in about 15 years, and my english skills are even worse, considering I haven't had any english classes in over 10 years, lol.

Those scores would be fine.
Much lower or higher scores are also fine.

The GRE is really very low on the list of criteria that the admissions committees care about. Your portfolio and letters of recommendation are very much more important.
A high GRE score is really only important if your GPA is unusually low (say less than 3.2 or so). Then the committee might look to the GRE scores to see if you "balance out". Otherwise they really make very little difference. I've seen candidates with scores in the 300s get accepted, and those with very high scores get rejected.

yes i'd agree with bloopox. i had kinda of a shoddy transcript. GPA was not terrible but i nailed the GRE which i think helped redeem myslef a little. but if you have good grades all you have to do is not bomb.

some top notch programs may have min. requirements. ie columbia:
"A score of 500 or above on both sections are suggested. GSAPP requires a minimum verbal score of 450. Submitted applications with a verbal score below 450 will not be reviewed"

btw i graduated from UWMilwaukee in dec

Good info, I've just been trying to go through some vocab words from a Barron's book I got, and review some basic math stuff. Really, how often does someone use the word abstemious?

Oh, amnesiac, congrats on getting outta SARUP, hope you had a decent job lined up early, its a rough one out there. Any chance of getting a peek at your application portfolio? =)

Overall I'm not too unhappy with that. I wont be able to apply for 2010, but since my gpa is currently under 3.0 I'm going to concentrate more on getting that back up and set to work on a wow portfolio.

milwaukee, those scores should get you by just fine. focus some on the gpa, but spend seriously, devote all the time you can on your portfolio. its for sure the biggest thing. if your school offers a portfolio design class i'd highly recommend taking it this fall. sounds like you're not graduating yet so you still have plenty of time. i took my school's portfolio design class and it forced me to get it done and also caused me to be more critical and creative... its definitely worth it.

I am looking to reapply for 2010 (got into my safety school in 2009 but decided I really wanted to try again for the program I want). I want to do everything I can to improve my application, including retaking the GRE if I have to.

I got decent scores the first time, but very skewed- 590 math, 760 verbal. I have always been good at math, I just haven't done much in about 5 years and ran out of time during the test. I know I could improve the math score if I tried, but I am not sure if it would be worth the extra effort. Most architecture students I know of got higher scores in Math than in Verbal.

Do you all think given the disparity, it would be helpful to up my score? FYI, the average math score for admitted students to this program is about 600, but my GPA is only 3.4 and I thought it might be necessary to make up for that.

to retake or not to retake? that is the question!

so i studied, praticed and learnt 500 plus words that i wouldnt use on a normal basis but my GRE score really shocked me.
everytime i did the practice tests, i would do way better in the verbal (500-630) section and extremely bad in math (400). However, my test scores turned out to be just the opposite with 390 for V, 750 for Math.
i really don't know what happened.

although i hear that the GRE is not everything and that your portfolio is more important along with the GPA, essay, recommendation letters. i am a permanent resident here and english is not my first langauge. but i know for sure that the 390 in verbal does not really represent me.

i am applying to the GSD (MArch II/MAUD) and their website says that 600 or above on each section seems to be scores that they typically get from the prospective students. i would hate to be rejected because of the GRE score. My GPA is 3.8 and I feel pretty strongly about my portfolio's strength.

Is it worth retaking the GRE? Any suggestions/advice would be most welcome and appreciated.

thanks,
