Hi guys,
since I am goign to move to Belgium in June, I am currently gathering info on all architecture schools there. I was initiallty set for St Luc or La Cambre in Bruxelles, but then a friend from Italy doing an Erasmus at St Luc is telling me she doesn't really suggest this institution for a First Level Master (the 2 of the 3+2 european degree). I am very puzzled now as I thought it would be a pretty good school. So I have started to look into other possibilities and I have come across Leuven Uni: it looks pretty interesting, but as I can see the First Level Masters are only in Dutch....and there's not way I can speak it by September :( I thought English could be enough (it is for secondary Masters apparently) so I am back to square one.
Is any of you attending an architecture Master there? What can you tell me about the school? It's very reaserch oriented as far as I can understand and I like that. I have done my first 3 years in Venice At IUAV and all I can say is that I want to move where there is real experimentation and a certain degree of open mindess, which is why I have decided to leave Italy: belgium is motivated by love: my partner is Belgian. I was originally restricting my options to the Bruxelles region even because of the language barrier in Flanders, but now I am willing to consider other options. The fact it that at the beginning I was pretty set on St Luc now after the latest news I get from there I am a bit lost.
Anyone can clear some of my doubts? Is there any other place in Belgium which is somehow comparable to Delft University in terms of research and experimentation?
I am even thinking to shift a bit North East and end up in Holland now, although I know the entrance requirements for Delft or Eindhoven are pretty high and I do believe my portfolio isn't strong enough as where I am now we are not allowed a lot of experimentation in our works. My marks are very good but I have reserves on portfolio. Anyone have experiences on these schools, first hand?
Can anyone please help me in solving my dilemmas? I would be very grateful guys.
That's the main problem with the Dutch schools - they seem good but almost all programs in Dutch (I think Eindhoven as well, according to their site). I know that Delft and Berlage have English programs for sure. Delft has a huge amount of apps this year.
Did you ask your friend why she thinks it's not good enough to study in Belgium?
Yes, she says the school is too focus on details and far too technical for her tastes. apparently , in her own words it lacks "poetry" in facing projectual research. At IUAV we tend to have more or an artistic training and we tend to skip over all the technical issues. She also pointed out how the library facilities are pretty small. I told here that architecture in Noirthern countries, meaning outside Italy (..) is more of a technical subject and I think the experimentation of Holland are the quintessence of it.
I am personally interested in Landscape Urbanism and would like to do a first level Master in architecture and urbanism with a specialization in this topic the following years so at the mometn I would be interested in a first level Master in Arch / Urbanism or Landscape Architecture which does not seem to be very easy to find in Belgium. So far I have only come across the Landsacpe Arcchitecture Master at Horta in Bruxelles.
And yup, the IUAV bookshop is nice! :) Not so nice the woman with the blonde who works there...she'a a bit rough sometimes! LOL
I can only speak for Delft, but in Delft the entire masters program is in English, only when everybody in the class/studio is Dutch the Dutch teachers switch. But in all my masterstudios there were international students and all teachers can communicate in English, so far I had Dutch, French, German, Korean, Israeli, American and British teachers.
And the master program offers all kinds of flavours, from traditional to digital and technical to experimenal. There's even a graduationstudio called explorelab where you yourself decide what it will be about and who your teachers are.

Wow randomized! You are talking about heaven on earth for someone coming from dear old and retrograde Italy! Here it's worst than ever and I am ready to move on.
Is it difficult to be admitted? I know the standards are really really high, as with any good school.
I don't think it's difficult to be admitted, if you meet the requirements they let you in. As far as I know no portfolio or letter writing etc. is required. But for standards (without strong selection), that means the average level/quality of the students varies, I've seen amazing projects, I've seen terrible projects. It is up to you to really take the maximum out of the studio and don't settle for average. Here's a link to the school newspaper you can see some examples of what's going on: http://bnieuws.wordpress.com/
randomized, it'd be good but unfortunately you must send portfilio, personal statement, English language Test and recs as well for Masters. And also you need to have your Bachelor degree. Paopao, you have 5 weeks for all.
Does any of you know about arch universities in Belgium? I have just discovered that Sain Lukas has an International Master taught in English, which is very interesting, combining architecture and urbanism.
Apparently it is the 3rd largest University for arch in Belgium after Antwerpen and Ghent.
TU Delft partners with KU Leuven (Flanders) for an English-language Post-Professional degree. I don't know if any of their other programs are in English.
