Hey Everyone! I have about a year before I do applications to M.arch 1's, I'm looking at school such as Columbia, Harvard, Prat, Parsons, Sci-Arc, etc... I really want to do a summer program and would love to do Columbia's as it's my first school of choice, but I live in Los Angeles and Sci-Arc is really close, so I won't have to worry about paying rent or travel.
Has anyone done Sci-Arc's Making and Meaning? Can anyone give some insight on this program? what it did for applications, and your portfolio, did help you with acceptances to other schools, or just sci-arc?
Sci arc just made an alliance with Hollywood developer Sam Nazarian, a night clubber and an urbanist, they will make crystal ball discos with the director Eric Moss shaking his booty for possible advancement and left over bones. A clean brake from their radical past.
Get in there early so you can dance too. Make it happen.
I have seen what M+M does and can vouch for it. You learn how to draft and design approaches. The projects are interesting yet abstract - great portfolio builder which I am sure will help with getting accepting anywhere (sciarc and other schools).
Hey MAarch can I ask where you ended up going for you March after doing M+M? Did you get portfolio pieces from the program? My portfolio so far is all graphic design and photography, I thought doing M+M would possibly put a couple design stuff into it. Any other info regarding M+M and what it did?
I just got accepted to SCI-Arc's Making + Meaning program but I haven't found anything on the website or on this forum about housing for admitted people (just for the duration of the program, not for MArch students). I emailed the admissions staff about this but they haven't gotten back to me yet. For anyone who has gone through the program that doesn't live in the LA area nor from CA, what did you do for housing? I live in MN.
Making + Meaning (don't EVER make the mistake of writing 'and') was good for someone like me who previously had very minimal experience in architecture. It was mostly grad students who were entering the M.Arch I, but I came away with a well-developed portfolio and was admitted to Pratt and CCA (both undergrad).
As far as living goes, I live north-west of the city and being at Sci-Arc every day (all day) was trecherous. Stay within Little Tokyo if possible because sleep is rare and a bed should be close by if you ever find the time to use one. Plus the one-minute dance parties and Friday beer festivities are not to be missed.
re: gooloo
sci-arc has a partnership with a nearby hotel and they are offering a discounted rate. if you email admissions they probably have some information on it.
i'm actually looking for housing myself. i live in southern california but the daily commute is a bit too far for my liking and would rather stay somewhere close by. if you or anyone else reading this wanna shack up for the duration of the program, hit me up.
My French roommate's visa just expired, so he's moving back home. I live in the Silver Lake area, which is about 15 mins from where Sci-Arc is. Looking for a roommate now. I'm not doing Making + Meaning, but I am doing the equivalent program at UCLA this summer: JumpStart Introduction to Architecture. PM me if you want to know more about the place/room.
Hey, I know this is kind of an old thread, but I am interested in hearing more about SCI-Arc's Making + Meaning program. I've applied, and I am a 19 year-old structural engineering student. Am I too young to attend? Or, do I need to have a background in architecture to actually do well?

I actually decided to attend Making+Meaning, so now I'm trying to find housing. Spaceinvader, what did you have in mind?
