Worried about LORs

rexxer

(LORs being letters of recommendation)

As I understand it, LORs are fairly important for architecture grad school admissions. I'm guessing that they should ideally come from art professors or professors who at least have the capability to write a compelling LOR that highlight your potential for success in architecture after taking a gander at your portfolio.

The problem is, in college I only took one art class (although, fortunately, I got an A in it, and the art class had a lot of architecture-related discussion).

So I will probably get a letter of recommendation from this teacher, assuming that an LOR from an art professor would hold more weight (due to the perceived greater likelihood that an art professor would be able to sufficiently analyze one's potential for success in architecture) than non-art professors in the face of architecture grad school admissions.

Other than that, what else could I do? How many LORs do I need to have a good chance in architecture grad school admissions? (Meanwhile, am I right in what I said before about art professors - that LORs from them would typically carry more weight than from non-art professors?)

Thanks for the help!

Through my experience, it appears that most graduate schools usually require at least 3 recommendations.

Are you in a position to take an evening class at a local community college? Most offer beginning sculpture, drawing, printmaking, etc. at a low cost. Not only can you build your portfolio with taking such a class, you may also be able to use this professor as a recommender.

What is your educational background? Let's say you majored in philosophy. I'd ask one of my professors to write a recommendation and highlight my strengths in analytical thinking. Let's say you majored in mathematics, I'd ask one of my professors to write a recommendation and highlight my strengths in problem solving.

Hope this helps. Godspeed.

Hi , I have a similar concern.

I had a bachelor and master degree in computer science, and i discovery what I really want to become is an architect.

I'm going to apply for M.Arch 1 program for Fall 2010. Right now, i'm facing the dilema who i should choose to write the letter of recommendation. I have the following choice.

Ask from my old Computer Engineering professors at U of Michigan, which they can verify my acdemia strength in math and science, but i don't think they will have anything to say about arts. They may be able to back up about my design ability and creativity about software programming...btw, i've graduated for 6 years and havn't contacted them for 6 years...

Ask from my current and previous employer. They prob have nothing to say about my potential for success in architecture, but should have alot to say about my professionalism as an IT consultant, and suggest that i'm smart.

Last, i can ask from the two instructors that i took painting and drawing classes from at Indianapolis Art Center. It is a local non-profit organization. Alot freelance artist teaches there. I think those two teachers also teach at a local community college. But they only know me for 2 months. I just took couple class this summer with them.

So, I want to get some opinions who I should choose to give recommendation.

thanks,
Jy
