London Now (and always)

fays.panda

I'm going to london in the weekend, it would be nice if any of you know anything about things going on currently (galleries, exhibitions, etc),,

and all time must see things (that may or may not have appeared in the previous threads, which i have already checked repeatedly, so spare me the crap)

Thanks :D

What are your dates? The London Art Fair is on January 14-18, in Islington (my home patch), and just a few hundred yards from the Estorick Collection which opens a Boccioni exhibition on the 14th.

If you are in the area, and you are not both a) really ugly, and b) really boring, I'll be at both over the weekend. Pretty and boring is fine, and ugly but stimulating is also totally acceptable.

From Islington you are only one stop on the underground from the joys of Hoxton & Shoreditch, as expounded on previous threads.

You might have followed links to the London Architecture Diary from other threads, and while there isn't much on in January, the exhibition at London Metropolitan University's Architecture school is again only a few hundred yards from the Estorick, and from there it's only a few hundred yards further, into the deeply unfashionable heart of Holloway to find Libeskind's first building in the UK - the graduate school of London Met. It's also worth walking West from the London Art Fair site at the business design centre (that's kind of behind it) for a look at some of the Georgian garden squares, if you dig that kind of thing, and Barnesbury Square, while the most heterogenous square in the area has a deep magic.

considering its your first time here...everything in the previous threads and what psyarch said above should do you just fine...dont worry that you will get bored! its not possible here.

timeout will have all things cultural listed, so check that out for what you may like each week. january is much slower than most months though. two awesome things just closed at the v&a and tate on the weekend :/

there are so many galleries museums and parts of town...just pick one per day...wander around and you may scratch the surface!

psyarch im also in islington...sweet deal. will be by the art fair on the weekend.

Also new (and old) is the renovation of the Garden Museum which is almost directly across the river from the houses of parliament. Worth a visit.

Probably mentioned in earlier threads is Erno Goldfinger's [url=http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-2willowroad.htm]house in Hampstead. It's a National Trust property, and the walk to it, from the underground station at the top of the hill is well worth it, for seeing the incredible wealth embodied in Hampstead's villas.

Well there is loads to see in regards to architecture and other culturally related things:

There are the museums in south kensington, the V&A has Zaha's floating sculpture/chandelier

adjay has projects dotted around the city like the idea store in whitechapel and dirty house in shoreditch (if you're in the area it gives you an excuse to party too)

if you're into more commercial architecture then the swiss re building and lloyds building are just down the road.

then further along you have some interesting buildings close to tower bridge and walk further down to the tate modern and the millennium bridge.

If you walk further up the south bank towards big ben there are other museums along the river.

Also check out the John Soane museum

Not sure if the AA has anything going on at the moment, check their website. If you're close to the AA then go to the British Museum

also the RIBA has lectures and other stuff going on so check their website too.

Have a good trip and remember to stand on the right on the escalator and walk up the left, otherwise you will be mauled... possible by me.

And since Jan Kaplicky just passed away have a look at the facade at 367 oxford street (might as well look at the neu look store close to selfridges too) and the Lords cricket ground Media Centre + the floating bridge in Canary Wharf

And if it is Art Galleries that you are interested in, the best listing is probably Art Rabbit.
