What is required or recommended for an architecture internship portfolio?

Rambo

I'm a first year architecture student and I'm trying to get an internship this summer and was wondering exactly what would need to be in my architecture portfolio? All my best models and stuff or just sketches? What is the sort of stuff they look for in a model? Do all firms have different portfolio requirements, or is there some kind of staple that i can be guided by?

at your stage, compile enough work (with difference) that shows them you have a diverse yet commendable skill set

recalling my first internship interview after my first year, they were mostly concerned with my proficiency at using proper line weights (i had a series of rapidiograph drawings) and my ability to build a clean model. design ability was not that important to them at this stage.

CAD wasn't that much of an issue back then, but learning it,and demonstrating you can use it would help you tremendously at this point.

Acknowledge that you aren't the only one being interviewed. Be aware that they aren't expecting much out of first year other than a willingness to commit to responsibility. Minimize the archi-speak and show work that's meaningful to you. And for future reference, a school portfolio is a lot different from a job portfolio. A school portfolio is personal, it shows your interests and what you admire as a designer, while a work portfolio is impersonal, it shows your competence as a prospective architect.
