Apologies if this has already been covered and I'm sure there are infinite possibilities, but I'm looking for a couple cool places to have dinner while in NYC. Places that have good food (doesn't have to be fancy), nice design/vibe, and could get me dinner for two in the $100 range...
Will be staying in mid-town, but anywhere on Manhattan is fair game.
You'll have plenty of options in that price range... My only real advice is to avoid the Times Square tourist ghetto like the plague, unless you feel like spending $17 for a crappy hamburger at TGI Friday's.
great list e. i would single out Joe's Shanghai if you have more than one night to eat out. it's nowhere near 50pp, so maybe not what you're looking for, but the food - dumplings and much else - is delicious.
big 2nd on Death & Co. good call Barrett. I was actually there Sunday. someone next to us at the bar ordered the Kobe Sliders, which looked great. our andouille hush puppies were ok, but our cocktails more than made up for it. sure, they're $13 each, but worth every penny (especially compared to PDT's weak drinks).
my favorite drink of the night was Grouse Rampant (scotch, cinnamon bark syrup, a liquer or two, and egg white). highly recommended, but you may want to arrive early since they keep capacity down. we arrived just after opening (about 6) and the place was full by 6:45. the gf was buzzed all night from the two drinks she ordered (some gin thing with grapefruit, blood orange liquer and lime; and a rum/bourbon drink with blackberry something or other...)
yeah, e's list above covers almost everything. slightly abridged, though, if there are time and or money constraints.

blowout meal - balthazar, alternatively gramercy tavern, and finally the modern if you are going for broke
post-drinking - katz's, russ and daughters if you are up all night

We hit Balthazar, Babbo, and Artisanal. Artisanal was okay. We needed to have an early dinner prior to taking my parents to see a play. Balthazar and Babbo speak for themselves.
We did a late night at the Spotted Pig. They make their own bitter on cask that yummy as were the grilled mackerel and fennel dusted fried sweetbreads. Mmmm, sweetbreads. We hit Trestle on Tenth the first night and did a handle of apps and charcuterie including the veal tongue, pork cheek rillettes, Puntarella lettuce with braised escargot and shaved pecorino romano, Crepinette pork shoulder with sauteed spinach, Crispy duck necks with garlic and anchovy aioli, and Parsnip and leek soup with seared chicken livers and bacon.
Three or four mornings we hit Murray's Bagels. Christmas Eve dinner was at Savoy. I had the duck consomme with duck dumplings and the suckling pig roulade.
I'm sure there are others that are not coming to mind right now. All in all great food, but I feel like I hardly scratched the surface.

Gray's Papaya in the West Village. Get the recession special for $3.95. Its the best!
