First some background, I am a studio art major with an emphasis on graphic design. I will be graduating in the spring of 2010.
The first question is... Should I take a year off and apply 2 years from now? I feel that my portfolio is worthy, and I have several noteworthy internships with graphic design under my resume. I hear all the time that I should take a year off, but I really have the desire to begin Architecture and apply next year for admittance right after college.
My second question is... I am interested in a lot of the progressive schools, (Sci-Arc, Pratt, Parsons) what could I be doing now, a year away from the application process. On top of building a good portfolio with graphic design to showcase my design skills, and grades, is there anything else I can be doing? As well what types of things do these progressive school look for in a portfolio?
And finally are there any other recommendations for more progressive, theory based schools?
Hey Guys thanks for the responses, I guess progressive wasn't the right word. What I meant was something really theory based that encourages experimentation. I Am really attracted to SciArc in the way it's known for it's avant-garde style.
Hope this helps, thanks again!
I don't think you should wait, go for it next fall! Hell if you have a portfolio already apply this year! SciArc's due date is still almost a month away!
have a good reason in your personal statements as to why you're going from your field to Architecture. Most, if not all, schools allow for experimentation. The school I attend, VTech, dwells in experimentation, but it's not considered "avant-garde."

I have several questions open for any response.

summer program = best way to get into a good school, if you apply yourself.
you should be able to go to a good summer school this summer, which would give you time to present or expand on what you did.
RISD had a good one, I think UCLA had one too.
Is it just me, or does it seem odd to put Pratt and Parsons (which I know nothing about, just that they never get mentioned) with Sci-Arc?
