You really just need to set up two cameras next to each other (like eyes) then render each out separately and composite (that's the tricky part--though supposedly you only need to drop the red channel from the one image and the blue from the other)
basically; by stereo rendering (stereoscopic), you are replicating the way we perceive 3D space--we can see in three dimensions because we have two separated eyes. 3D movies are made either with this virtual technique or with a camera that is essentially two cameras tied together, with each camera getting a slightly different vantage of the scene (like our eyes). The downfall of all of this is that it requires some sort of special equipment to view the "3D images", whether it's red/blue colored lenses (old method), polarized lenses (modern method), or a special monitor that displays the stereo image (some don't even require special glasses now)
I don't know of any rhino plugins for stereoscopic rendering--you'd probably have to set it manually. Does rhinoscript give you access to camera controls??
I've done rudimentary stereoscopic images (still images) by just rendering two images separated by the distance between human eyes, and then tinting one blue and one red. It was a while ago though (in Microstation!)
it's kind of light and it doesn't seem to account for line of sight convergence (it's just using offset parallel views), but it should at least get you started
Stereo Rendering
Has anybody stereo rendered in either Maya or Max? If so what plug in did you use?
I have access to a beautiful 8x3m screen with 2 HD projectors and I want to use it for something besides Google Earth.
I know that Maya 2009 comes with a built in stereo rig but our subscription hasn't upgraded yet so we are still on 2008.
here are a few links that may help:

We are using a TriDef system, and there is apparently a 3ds plugin Tridef makes but I am having no luck finding it.
Plus, that installation diagram looks nothing like the inside of my McLaren, that would be right where my steering wheel is.
From my quick google search it looks like you need to contact them directly for the plugin
Will do
What exactly is stereo rendering?
my friend rendered some duck fat for Thanksgiving!!!
this link has a fairly good explanation:

Thx for the explanation Rehiggins
Now besides maya do you know if rhino has these type of capabilities(with or with plugins).

here's a PDF tutorial on setting up the cameras in Rhino
