George Ferguson, the president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, has a half-serious proposal to address that situation: Grade X. Just as cities can designate beloved buildings "historical" and prevent their modification, cities should be able to mark ugly buildings for destruction by giving them an "X" designation and making them eligible for destruction grants

Paris regrets the Tour Montparnasse; Londoners dislike the appearance of the Barbican Center; and Brussels now has too many soulless European Union office buildings to count. Ferguson suggests the problem lies with too much architectural ambition and glory-seeking: "I think we are being seduced by architectural photographs and architecture magazines. I believe in making places. Urban design and master planning, including scale, are more important than architecture."
