Central Glass Competition

dansim

Hello All:

Not to make unfounded accusations, but there is a small question in my mind as to the fairness or apparent bias in the Central Glass Competition, being that last year (2007), 7 of the shortlisted entrants were Japanese (the 8th was Korean); this year, 8 of the entrants appear to be Japanese (please correct me if I'm wrong). Their web site doesn't offer a complete archive at all of previous year's results except going back 1 year.

This is good opportunity each year in that this competition is open, there is no fee, and its premise offers a wide degree of design freedom.

However, if indeed it is meant to be internationally open, then out of 733 entrants in 2008, presumably with many from the US, Canada, and Europe, why is there an apparent exclusivity to the sponsor's home country?

Given that descriptive text appears on the competition board, then the selection committee can't claim a totally anonymous selection process - any entry not written entirely in Japanese is marked.

Would the sponsor care to reveal what the breakdown of the entrant's home countries is from this year's group of applications? Were 90% of the entries, 660 out of 733, from Japan ?! Do enough entrants who may be reading this care to group together and see if the sponsor wishes to address this ?

Again, although this competition has no fee to enter, everyone who entered presumably put a fair degree of earnest time and money into the process nonetheless - I think it's reasonable to be given some indication as to the integrity of the process that was entered in good faith.

dude 6 out of 10 finalists are not japanese

this is japanese competition. i suspect more japanese know about it.

the judges are a committee. is possible they have biases, but theoretically they even out. may be japanese youth has better feeling for the kind of work the judges are thinking about, but doubt is intentional slight.

Well, seeing that the winners of this year's competition are from Berkeley (Rene Davids and Taylor Medlin), that pretty much shoots down your theory.
