Indigenous Texas Stone

I'm looking for locally quarried dimensional stone panels from Texas (specifically the Houston area or within 500 miles). I've found a few mentioned online: sandstone, limestone ("white rock"), some marble and granite, but otherwise haven't come up with anything. I've called a couple of distributors but they haven't gotten me past what I already know. Can anyone offer some other examples or maybe even some reputable distributors in the area? Thanks!

What you're calling 'whiterock' we call Austin Stone. Its not really indigenous to Houston so much, though. As it's name states, its a hill country staple. The hill country is on the edge, but still within the 500 mile distance mentioned. Texas Granite is Pink, and comes more from the north Central region around the Brazos river. Guess I need to know what you're looking for, past dimensional stone, to help you more. What are you using it for? What do you want it to look like?

Oh, and you're not going to use it up in those Yankee states are you? I might just not hep you. ;)

naw. it won't be importing it to yankeeland. it's for a project in houston. we are just finishing up schematic design so we're starting to research material options. we're looking for dimensional panel stone (sheets) that are around 1-1/2" - 2" thick.

not sure where to get the material, but a nice one is what we used to call "shell-stone" - which is a limestone, with sea-shells embedded. it was used extensively on all the earliest buildings at the University of Houston, and other civic buildings from the 50's and 60's in Houston. i am pretty sure it is quarried within the Houston area. it can turn somewhat grey over time, but has nice patterns and unexpected textures.

that sounds like the limestone @ TWBTA's neurosciences institute.

houston does not have stone... it is all clay!
i guess if you are really looking local, you would have to use a brick.

but of course austin's limestone as previously mentioned is as close as you are going to get.

thanks raj. we are exploring stone materials in addition to using brick.

ether:

you may track down a limestone specific to only one area of Texas called Lueders Limestone. They have a specific stone known by locals as "Turkey Track" due to the fossilized presence of plant material on the face of the stone exposed to more alluvial soil. It gets its name from a surface appearance like that of tracks left in mud from turkey feet. You can order it cut into panels of varying size and thickness. Just another option.
