So i'm getting a macbook sometime in August before I transfer schools and I need to know if I should go with the macbook or the macbook pro.
i'd be using the mac end for cs3, rhino, etc and the windows xp end (via bootcamp) for autocad and 3ds max, spending most of the time on the mac end. I'm not going to be doing any extremely intensive renderings.
So is it possible for me to get by on a regular macbook, or should I go with a macbook pro for the better graphics card and speed? Will it matter a whole lot?
(i've been reading/searching for old threads, but some are a bit too old to apply to this)
work or travel. I've had a pro for a long long time but will be switching to the regular macbook as I'm looking for a low cost 250gb highly portable mac.
if you are going the AutoCad/Rhino route then you need the pro. Apple do great refurb deals and it's 10-15% off for students (with the educational discount).
Well both machines are actually very close in performance for most purposes except graphics performance. The Macbook's onboard video is bad. No computer games for you, and the updating speed of your 3D modelling viewports will be poor.
A Macbook Pro has a much higher-res screen, and a real graphics card, as well as other little niceties like the multitouch trackpad and backlit keyboard. The only disadvantages are cost (lots more than a Macbook) and portability.
Pro. See if your local university bookstore still has any deals on the immediate previous generation of mbP's. I got a great deal on mine because I was willing to not get the generation that just got outdated a couple of months ago.
ok sorry i just read the subject of the thread and not even the comments, but go for the MCBOOK PRO at least 15" if u dont mind the bulky get the 17" why?? easy, more RAM, better performance for design/architecture related programs than the regular macbook, and also, i dunno if u r planning to get blind working on the small screen of the MACBOOKS.... nobrainer for me
dont tell me you planned to buy a car with that saved money man???, think about this, you buy ur new MAC BOOK PRO, looks fantastic, u get motivated have a terrific semester and then u end up hooking up couple of graphic design small gigs and then by the end of the semester ur thrilled w/ur machine and also made 3 times more money that u saved on your summer
well i'm getting the macbook pro (2.4, 15") next week but i've been reading sites like macrumors . com and i'm now afraid that they're going to go off an introduce the first major design change in the MBPs in the next month or two.
Intel Predicts 25-Watt Laptop CPUs Will Be The New Standard - Report
Electronista has posted an interesting short report noting that Intel expects to make notebook processors running at 25 watts the new standard, with forthcoming systems based on its upcoming Centrino 2 mobile platform (aka "Montevina"), and which will include the next generation of Apple MacBook models, to be less power-hungry dropping significantly from the 35 watts demand of the current Penryn Core 2 Duo processors. This can be expected to extend battery life and make the systems run cooler with less fan
The report says at least three of the Montevina processors will draw 25W or less running at clock speeds of 2.26GHz, 2.4GHz, and 2.53GHz while offering the same performance as their more power-hungry processors, while also supporting support a faster 1,066MHz system bus and with the option of using DDR3 memory.
This all reinforces my deduction that Montevina 'Books may well be worth waiting for.... perhaps not too long now (see item below).
Intel's Centrino 2 launch is scheduled for July 14.
Yeah, the Montevina processors do look extremely tempting and i'll probably end up watching apple, macrumors, and all of these other sites for a few more weeks. I don't absolutely need the macbook until mid August- so I can hold off a little longer.
It's seems like if they announce anything, it won't be for at least another few weeks until the whole 3g iphone thing settles down. I just hope it gets upgraded during the back to school promo.

No. You'll need a laptop with a real graphics card. That's the pro. Yes, it willl make a difference.
