has anyone registered or is doing the c2c compeition? since information is a bit lean about it unless you register, any info would be appreciated if your already registered [dont know if i want to put a team together yet1]
Ted,
I am working on the competition and have paid for the registration but information from the website is you see right now. After you paid the fee to enter you get a signed copy of Cradle2Cradle, which a very thought provoking read on how we current design not only architecture but common objects and systems in which we produce these objects. Also you you recieve a password to buildinggreen.com to access their database for green construction.

b4g, thanks. thats pretty much what the web site says. i have the book and read it last year when it came out. do they give you anymore site specific information about where the project site, photos, etc., or is these really a competition to further stroke bill mcdougahs larger than life 'me' ego? it still angers me that these competitions go out to get your money just to show you the details of what the competition brief is about in detail.
and really, if i want someones autograph i will go to a baseball card trading show but why do i want b-mcd's autograph? is it suppose to make me feel special?
for those of you that have read or held the cradle book in your hands, do you find the weight of the book problematic? i thoroughly appreciate his ideas, but the weight of the book - even with all highminded idealism between the covers - seems on its face to challenge some of the ideas put forth. how many books fit in a case/box, how much does that box weigh, when shipped doesn't it take more energy - human and fuel - to move the product based on the added density of the book? isn't there a better way to go about this?
beta, if you toss it in your webber next time your doing smokies, it goes full circle, right? strike that, i suppose your not suppose to be using your webber unless you are using a smokeless fuel, no lighter fluid [ozone depletion]. maybe a door stop or window stop would be a appropiate next life. its not soft enough for tp. if i do the comp, i will ask not to get the book [but want a discount on the registartion] else, ebay here i come!
the 'paper' or 'plastic-like-sliver-elements with the words on it' is nice to touch though. since i bought my copy from a local 'non-barns+noble' book seller, at least i supported a local merchant.
oops...somehow between the original time the c2c site was set up and now all the site info has been added. good. clearly no archinect'rs must be doing it as no one mentioned the stuff was actually there!
I saw Greg Lewis recently (the architect who is putting this on), and there were over 600 people registered from multiple countries already. I will say that I really appreciate that he has had the information up for close to three months and that you could design the entire thing without having to register. There are few competitions that allow for this. I saw the site and the competition in May, and although it was incomplete, you could get a start on it (although most of the people I know doing it, havent really started yet). Several schools are doing it too. So when you feel like slacking, realize somewhere out there are students spending ungodly amounts of time on it.
thanks jordanp- with 600 registered, might skip it. info wasnt on the web site prior to the low fee registration deadline 15 july [i wrote off the the info section with a non-response] - thats why i wasnt going to register. i dont recall seeing it back in aug when i checked. most comps do tell you everything about the competition without collecting a dime prior to registering and if they are doing an international competition in accordance with UIA they should be abiding by this agreement. [after all, you are already contributing your ideas, your energy, your printing - for gratis. why should i pay someone just for the privlage of seeing the brief?]
the fee of $150 is outragous considering it is a single family residence. most folks who understand sustainablity would have sought out the book and read it much earlier that even the competition announcement [i have had it since july of last year] so connecting the book to the registration is not truely a 'sustainble practice' unless again your are one of the authors or publisers.
