LEED Innovation in Design Credits

mack

Does anyone know the specifics of the innovation in design credits. My specific question is this: If you are 'innovative' in one building and recieve a credit in this category, can you use the same technique again in a different building/project and still be eligible to recieve the same credit? Does this question even make sense?

The intent of those credits is "o provide design teams and projects the opportunity to be awarded points for exceptional performance above
the requirements set by LEED ... and/or innovative
performance in Green Building categories not specifically addressed by LEED..."

The intent is not "innovative" used in the sense of "never seen before". The intent is "innovative" meaning "achieves LEED's goals in a way that isn't specificaly provided for in some other credit". So yes, you could get credit for the same innovation on more than one project.

A list of past ID points can be found via my blog @ http://reallifeleed.blogspot.com/2008/05/id-credit-gold-box.html

Also, the draft of the 2009 version is moving from 5 ID credits to 6, with one for having a LEED AP, and there is now a max of 3 that can be used for exemplary performance, leaving the remaining 2 to be used exclusively for innovation points. See a review of the new draft @ http://reallifeleed.blogspot.com/2008/05/regionalization-public-comments-and.html

RLL - When does LEED v.2009 actually begin? The announcment I received from USGBC didn't give any specific dates and I haven't taken the time to look on the website.

Good question. I would assume sometime in 2009, but don't know much more than that. (That was not intended to be some assholish sarcastic response!) I'm not definite on the following time periods, and am at the moment too lazy to look them up for certain.

Basically the USGBC operates under a public comment process that moves about as fast as congress. What has been released so far is the first draft for public comment. There are 30 days for open comments, after which that period will be closed and the LEED topic advisory groups (or maybe it's the LEED steering committees?) will incorporate the comments into a second draft. Not sure how long that process takes.

The second draft is then released and undergoes a similar public comment period. After that I'm pretty sure all public comments are closed and the same committees refine these further into the final draft. Once that is complete, there is a vote (again via the committees?) and the changes are either accepted or denied...

Again... It's almost midnight and I've been working too hard today to back my comments up with actual verification, so I'm working from memory. That said I'm pretty sure I'm about right on the process, and I'm definitely sure it's slow....
