the studio is for artists James Casebere and Lorna Simpson
"The studio’s intimidating facade is something of a trademark for Adjaye... The Vanderbilt Studio, as the Brooklyn building is called, is armored in polypropylene panels that are normally used for shipping containers..."
I don't give a shit. Almost all Archinect discussions deevolve into that kind of bullshit.
I am interested in the materiality and the flow of spaces. Does the lighting work? Has anyone actually been through it?
The panels look like a sheet of material stretched across a frame. Appropriate for a pair of artists. Or is it a solid panel? Does anyone know the spec?
the exterior cladding is solid and smooth, but has a fabric-like pattern "printed"(?) on it. the first time i saw the building, i went up to it and touched the wall to see what it felt like/what material it was. it's interesting to see the above images of it because i had no idea it looked like that in the back.
Frankly, as a person that works in the NY architecture scene, I cannot begin to imagine the nightmares involved to bring that thing to fruition. Then again, maybe things are different in BK.
holz you couldn't have said it any better. He is a pimp and that isn't degenerating this thread any. Adjaye has managed to carve a niche for himself, much like HdM did in the earlier part of their career as a material tactician.
The apparent texture aside i'm curious how the edges turn in on themself. I would be interested to see this in person.
All I know is that I used to go to school in Clinton Hill and a former gf of mine used to live in Fort Green and that I used to have by that place like twice a week and the from the other side of the street it looked stellar and from the same side the cladding made me want to barf. His house in Shoreditch is a lot nicer. At least from the exterior.
The interior shots are nice. I expect a lot from Adjaye, though I think they are moving beyond the minimal one-off single family [person] thing and into more public/cultural buildings. Does anyone know what's going on with his museum of African-American history in DC?
Did anyone see the David Adjaye-designed house on the Fort Greene House Tour?
Did anyone see the David Adjaye-designed house on the Fort Greene House Tour? The tour was May 4th.
I saw a few photos on Flickr.

If you did see it, what were your impressions?
holy crap! that house was designed by david adjaye!? i walk past it all the time and never knew that! neeto
What does the cladding material look like in person? What is it?
per this nyt article...

adjaye's a pimp. any clue as to why he's opened a berlin office as well - maybe they're hiring?
"adjaye's a pimp."

Kudos for finding a photo of them.
hmm... 5 seconds to determine the material and snag photos...
write yer own spec and stop copying pimps...
I found that too.
This was more interesting:

What I find interesting is that the specifications I read recommend against "long-term uv exposure."

Kalyani,
Can you take some closeup photos of it?

Sure makeArchitecture, I can probably post them later today or tomorrow.
Here you go.
Is there a texture that you can feel?
Very cool. Thanks!
nope. it looks like there would be texture from further away, but it's perfectly smooth when you touch it.
that shit is hot.... anyone going to his lecture tomorrow at the National Building Museum?
I'll be there.
I really like his work. Not so sure what to think of this one. Not a fan of that backyard elevation.
If anybody is still interested 2-1/2 years later, here is Adjaye speaking about the house. He describes the skin in some detail.

I really like the seemingly staid plans and the way they develop into sections and elevations. Light and shadow dances through the sections...

Do you think the little tweaks in the stair and in the drywall really work? Or are they just pranks?
