I've just completed my first year as a design student at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, GA. I'm thinking about transferring to University of Southern California after I complete my 2nd year here in Marietta. My father attended USC, and I have a 4.0 GPA.
I was wondering if my chances were good at getting admitted. Also I wanted to know about the overall program. My dad often complains about USC because the school was so large, and he was merely a number. Does that go for the architecture program there as well?
Also, scholarship wise... Are they generous?
Any thoughts that anyone has on the program there, please share!
I'm not sure if you've made your decision yet since your post is a couple months old, but just thought I'd chime in...
Scholarship-wise, SC is quite generous, although I think it's probably easier to get a scholarship (directly from the University, that is) as a freshman rather than a transfer. Your best bet is probably to apply for a private scholarship. The admissions counselors at SC should be able to point you to a few private scholarships, grants, and even some school scholarships.
As for the GPA, a 4.0 definitely helps your admission. Since SC is a private school, usually GPA is not as big of an issue, but a higher one is always a good thing. I would recommend putting together a really sharp portfolio, since they will want to see examples of your work. They may also require you to take a summer studio course at SC before you join the fall class to make sure you're on the same page as the rest of the students. When I was at SC, transfers were usually placed in 2nd year if they transfered from a 2-year college, but since you are coming from a university, the policy may be different. I was there several years ago, so the requirements may have changed since then anyways. If you have any specific questions, I am in contact with several of the professors there, so I can pass your questions along to get an off the record response if you'd like.
Hope that helps.
