Sketchup shadows

ZipGUN

Is it possible to reset the shadows settings for specific locations, latitudes, etc.? I'm using the free version 6, but will be getting the new Pro version soon.

You can't do it by specific location like 3ds max, but you can sort of fudge everything else.

If you choose the above tab 'windows' and then 'shadows' it will allow you to choose the time of the day, and then the date. If you orient your model towards the +,+ quadrant, you can consider that your north arrow. Sketchup Shadows are mainly aesthetic (notice the hard cast shadow edges) and aren't scientifically accurate. For example, even if you know the exact altitude of the location, and put your model to that altitude the cast-shadow angles won't change in accordance to how high it is. Plus there is no sun in sketchup, just shadows.

Oh, I forgot to say, "unfortunately" to begin my response because I really wish there was a "Day Lighting" option in sketchup. Meanwhile, I've just been importing sketchup models into 3d max to get the best daylighting effects.

Anyways, I hope this all helps.

The V-ray for sketchup plug-in is definitely a good choice if you have several hundred bucks to throw down (assuming it isn't available to you through work or school).

But I think zipgun is using the free version of sketchup. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think V-ray is compatible with the trial version.

If you go into the [Window] menu and select the [Model Info] menu, then pick [location], you can set the location of your model. You can pick from a list or set the coordinates of your exact location if you have them. You can set the solar orientation as well from this location.
This will create realistic shadows for your location when you set the date and time in the standard [shadows] menu.
This is true for the latest Pro version, don't know about the free one.

Has anyone used V-Ray for sketch-up? Are the renderings similar in quality to 3D Studio?
