Is there such a thing as an M.Arch safety school? I may be over-thinking this admissions process, but I would certainly sleep better if I felt as though my chances were padded as well as they could be. I think I've got a strong case for admission, graduated in '03 from Skidmore with a BA in psychology, but have been working in construction, particularly high-end residential in Lake Tahoe since then. The work has rekindled a lifelong passion for houses and design, but I don't have a huge volume of "portfolio-quality" material generated as of yet. I, like andytee, am not necessarily looking to be in an ultra-competitive environment, just somewhere where I can develop and learn effectively. Suggestions???
I mention Newschool only because 100% admissions rate
if thats what you mean by safety
General View of newschool:
Not everyone at newschool belongs in architecture....A lot of people dont have the passion (especially in the undergrad) but I believe that there are many very talented individuals that would surprise you.
I have seen many people who dont belong at newschool, they are way too talented(by what is considered newschool standard). The Faculty I believe is like everyother school...Some are good and some just suck.....
I am a Graduate student at Newschool of Architecture....
in my second year....My Studio Professor (Marcel Sanchez).....Is Pushing us Hard Probably one of the best professors I have had...He is a really great instructor..... Sometimes I am surprise that I am able to keep up with him...But Architecture is what I want to do.....
If I can go back I would probably have tried to gone to SciARC....but there is no going back....And I hold no Regrets.....I work Hard and I know I am capable of hanging with the best of you....
So there you go for Safety---non ultra-competitive environment,
Apparently there are a good number of highly regarded schools that have relatively high acceptance rates. Sci-Arc and Michigan come to mind, with 70% and 80% acceptance respectively.
In other words, a high acceptance rate is not synonymous with a low-quality education.
if you're a california resident, check out ucla, berkeley, and cal poly pomona. last one is probably the least competitive. all of them are a great deal for residents. there's also cca, although more expensive than the state schools mentioned above.
Cal poly Pomona is not least competetive.
Last year we had less than a 15% acceptance rate for the M Arch program and 5% for undergrad.
get your numbers right.
Tough school, there mdler... a certain tiny individual that lives at my house successfully took on that curriculum while riding a pretty similar vehicle.
Safety Schools???

have yet to apply. but it is my safety (AA, ETH)
Last year the "AMAZING" Sci-Arc had a 70% acceptance rate. that seems like a good safety school. As Long as you have the money to waste.

mich's acceptance rate is more like 55%, which in and of itself is ludicrously high

it is higher for 3+
Does your state of residence have an in-state school offering an MArch? Would save money on tuition, too.
