you don't need the RDK--you just need to read the manual and refer to the compiled help file that installs with Rhino Maxwell.
some quick tidbits:
Maxwell does not fake lighting situations, therefore it needs real geometry for emitters (emitters are actually a type of material)
Watch your horizon line and make sure that you have a "ground plane" otherwise you might get unexpected lighting at the horizon no matter what time you have selected in the environment dialog.
you know, i spent all this time trying to fool around with the settings and then realized, in the end there was just something screwy with the time settings. i had it set to june 20 1:30 p.m. but it was rendering some seriously funky sunsets. i set it to 7 pm and now i'm golden.
thanks for your patience with the rendering challenged. i feel slightly less old school now.
dillup: there's an option in there somewhere for GMT offset, I think. and also a daylight savings time (yes or no option). fiddle with these settings. you shouldn't have to set the wrong time to get the right light!
and don't be afraid to upgrade to the latest maxwell/rhino plugin. the latest version's got no bugs that i can find.
there's also the known issue of the sky model being too accurate--it gives sunset/rise type images at the horizon even when set to non-sunset/rise times (noon on one side of the earth is night on the other). You have to make sure that you have a ground plane and it covers enough of the space…

Maxwell in Rhino (i am so goddamn oldschool??)
Are there tutorials/ instructions anywhere for using maxwell in rhino? I can't find any ANYWHERE.
I can't even get shadows. Or create lights. All I can do is change textures from the library and render out from rhino. plus why is my sky orange?
its late and my renderings look like doo-doooo
please help me.
i need some serious shadows. some radiosity-type reflection / indirect illumination.
some dope night renders would be nice too,
i'll give you some animal crackers.
try the Maxwell forums or the THINK site
or you could try reading the manual…
Can I have some animal crackers anyway?
i never did anything and it worked great 1st time
sounds like you are at sunset?
do you have the RDK installed?
i think my success was do to having flamingo installed beforehand same with Vray working so well too. (they all use the same RDK)
are the crackers vegan?

Scene manager man, scene manager
Why are you so old school?
By radiosity-type reflection, do you mean reflection?
You ask for so much. Make sure GI is set to 7.0. Done.
ya i have a whole range of MXM files for every type of light to apply as a material to light bulb objects.
thanks, animal crackers to all.
