Maya question? floorplans, sections

difficultfix

I know that in Maya you are not able to produce floorplans and sections. I am assuming that you have to export your model into another program such as rhino or cad. I have tried exporting into rhino as an fbx file, but the file comes in as a triangulated mesh which does not let me extract floor plans or sections. so my question to all you experienced maya users is how do you acomplish extracting your floorplans sections , elevations from your Maya models?? what software do you export to, what file extension, do you need a plugin?

a big thanx in advance

If you are working in poly's in Maya then I recommend exporting as a .obj file, ir If you are using NURBS export as an .iges. If you don't see these options you may need to load them from the plug-in manager under settings and preferences. If you have a Sub-D, convert it to nurbs before exporting. I generally export to Rhino because it provides great precision, and then cut all the sections and plans out of the rhino file.

if you use rhino, go download the free trial version of the t-splines plugin. go to the site and check out what it does, its a great add-on to nurbs modeling.
how it helps you - it can convert meshes into single nurbs surfaces...so you don't have the huge poly count associated with turning meshes into nurbs in either maya or rhino. then you can section and archcut [another good plugin if you don't know] away

You can also import the geometry into Revit. Revit automatically creates plans, section and elevations.
