Sketchup to Digital Project

induct

I am having the worst time with this. I have been getting the Sketchup model into Rhino but when I try to save it as an Catia surfaces IGS file it won't export the polygon mesh. I also tried converting the mesh to nurbs in Maya but my exporters in Maya are acting strangely.

Any ideas?

IGS is nurbs. No meshes.

yeesh, too many apps! Any way you can simplify your workflow?

i will load Digital project and give it a try myself for you FOG Lite, I think you are the right path with Rhinoceros

maybe try asking Ghery Technologies? they started using Rhino before they made their own program, i bet they might have some answers.

Clearly IGS is nurbs, that is the problem. I got the mesh into nurbs using - MeshtoNURBS in Rhino and was then able to get it into Digital Project but the load time in DP was insanely slow and I wasn't that happy with the result of the model. I will keep messing with it. The issue is that it is a fairly large model and in the translation process it losses a little bit of clarity each time.

As far as my workflow goes I also use Autocad, MicroStation and ECOTect
But I am in somewhat of a unique position. Well, I guess not unique but it is my job. DP is my main focus though.

Anti, Rhino and the GT software are used by different departments at Gehry's. Still.

Oh sorry back to the topic, induct, using meshtoNurbs is bad method. It converts each facet to a NURBS surface. So if you have a mesh with 500 facets - you get a polysurface with 500 surfaces. That's insane. I can imagine there must be a use for the command, but this is certainly not one of them. You'd have better luck rebuilding each mesh.

try T-splines

Antisthenes ,
Just wondering if you have used T- splines and if so what is your thought on it. I have been playing around with the evaluation but its still a bit difficult for me to use properly

i think it is the most powerful modeling tool out, to allow continuous surfaces outside the traditional 4 side patch.

but for the specific application of this transfer it is great at turning mesh into nurbs patches with T junctures, if that is the only way you are able

i would have to try and i am a anti-fan of sketchup for just the reason that it is mesh based... how long would it take to remake the model in Rhino using Nurbs i wonder

like a hybrid between Sub-D and plain nurbs with the accuracy mesh could never think to give.

Garpike, thanks. It definitely came out the way you said. And since the model has a large amount of faces (it is an entire central business district) the end result is a really messy file in Digital Project.

I downloaded the MeshtoSolid plugin for Rhino so I am going to mess with that and see what happens.

Antishenes, I agree about Sketchup, but the model is already made and was floating around so I just wanted to see what was possible. I could remake it in Rhino, or for that matter in DP off of the Autocad file but really I just want to experiment.

I really appreciate everyone's comments and help.

Also, StudioWookie, I don't know your situation but if you are in school Digital Project has a fairly cheap student license.
