I'm a new grad student at Yale and it's gonna be my first time living in the US so I'm not really familiar with how things works over there.

Do most students go to dorms or rent apartments? I applied for a dorm but they said there's no guarantee that there'll be rooms available and I'm not sure if living at a dorm would be a good idea. I also looked up some rooms on craigslist but didn't find anything. Most of them were too far, too expensive, etc. It probably would have been better if I could come to New Haven sooner and check out some places myself but I can't come before August. 

So if there are any current Yale students here, do you have any advice for me? Where did you find roommates? Do you know anybody looking for a roommate?
