Hey guys and girls;
Trying to put together a comp. with a former prof in London, and the guidelines are somewhat set, as well as contributors (participant architects/theoriticians & jurors : some big names involved) but needing some assistance with setting up funding (so we can pay out cash prize + as well as paying for a workshop that will decide the winners). Paul, maybe you have some info that may be useful.
I can use anything you guys can think of and/or suggestions, contact #'s and emails. It's set for next year and will be an open comp, so all you would be invited to participate.
I would appreciate any thoughts. Please be as helpful & detailed as possible.
Thanks all
(if need be you can email me directly - ck the profile page)
check the graham foundation for the arts , they have in the past giving some funding [maybe up to 5k] for comps/lecture/books ..... mght be useful to describe the comp further to us so we suggest better. nea is dead now with regard to arch comp funding
here the city has sponsored 4 comps in the last 5 years or so.
and if its not already connected to a univeristy partner locally, thats probably the best option -- even scrapped for cash most unis try to do one or more sympisiums per year -- have the comp drive the symposium
TED thanks....as of right now, the comp is based (will be based) out of the UK ( my former tutor at the bartlett, also a PhD candidate is going forward with this idea, and has recruited me). I will add more info as I gather it...will post something later today.
We though of partnering up with UCL (whom the bartlett is part of) however an idea of a N.P.O. being set up is better, as the potential of this growing into an individual business may flourish.
We already have on board several high profile architects, designers and artists. Need funding and also advertisement.
not sure graham will fund outside us, but grants given 2x per year. setting up to compete with riba competitions office?
if you havent contacted uia to gat ahold of the guidelines for international comp, i would strongly recommend it. having done some uk comps, i think the riba comps office is sometimes 'used' wrongly by developers to get cheap design ideas [although i like what urban splash has done, i did the salford comp and really they got a tremendous amout of stuff for naught].
and certainly add cabe to your list of 'gotta get some bucks!' and will also state the obvious, go to the web site of various comps and find out who is underwritting them.
you might consider contacting mark robbins, the x nea guro who is now at syracuse for a chat and advice.
ok all here's a bit more info on that future comp......
It's going to be an open design comp dealing with space of propoganda/more speficically, the DMZ
The notion of certain spaces existing uninhabited, thus living untamed.
I don;t wish to devulge anymore since as I mentioned there are many elements we need to work out, nevertheless....that gives you guys some idea.
The plan is to have the ideas comp
then select certain # of entries to compete in a second invited workshop phase, which might be taking place outside the US and UK
and lastly once the selection has been made of the winners, there will be a public exhibition in the home city (where the workshop took place, and publication to follow that.
Ideally if we get enough funding, I was thinking of also trying to get additional design cities to entertain an exhibition, (LA, NYC, London, Paris, Etc.)
The timetable looks like it will be spring of next year.
Contributors include, Christof Blaesius, Peter Cook, Jonathan Hill, Tadashi Kawamata, Kyong Park, Chan-wook Park, Eyal Weizman, and Lebbeus Woods.
Obivously all this info is still being complied, and I am hoping I can help get this thing of the ground. I ask for any help since I am clearly a novice at this, but going into it with a full head of steam (and I hope) Patience.
Please let me know your thoughts, as any help will do.
TED thanks again for the info. If you have Mark Robbins' email or # I'd love to get that from ya.
I am whole heartedly inspired by your post. Because I too may be close to organizing a competition over the next year. I hope you continue to post your gained-knowledge from it here, so I too can benefit from your experience and others' feedback.
It sounds pretty cool to me, can't wait to hear more.
thanks TED...Im afraid I didnt know about it till now, but thanks a mill.
Have tried looking up Robbins email and contact info, if all else fails then it's on to the Syracuse phone list.
Bryan....sounds good, Will do as far as passing on info. As for starters, well....I can't take all the credit as I was sort of "recruited" into it, nevertheless at the very ground level, therefore I feel like part of it's inception.
Will continue with any new developments.
