Hello all... I am pretty new to rhino and the rendering process. I came across an image in the student gallery which caught my eye http://archinect.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=5&pos=243 Can anyone give me some advice on how to get this lighting effect and surface textures. It would be appreciated.
I dont thnik this was done on Flamingo...
But if you were going to try to this type of lighting i would use directional lighting. for surface textures you can make your own with your own Camera or by searching online for materials.
Vray is a great program I have never used it but have seen it in action. I have been using maxwell render here and there. So look into Vray and also check out maxwell render
I don't think Flamingo will currently do ambient occlusion or global illumination. If that is the effect you are after then I think Vray is definitely the right choice for you. The image you linked to is actually the easiest thing to render since you have no textures/ materials and no lighting so it will take a minute or two to render.
Perhaps Flamingo nXt will have it, but that is still months away and will be in beta for another year or so most likely.

But that rendering was probably done on Vray
Researching around Vray does seem to be the program to use. Thanks for the input.
I did these with Flamingo
I only use flamingo, because its fast..
And it does produce decent renderings.

flamingo 2 is allot better than flamingo 1.1 and Flamingo nXt is coming soon i believe
also Brazil Vray Maxwell Indigo Fryrender and others use the same RDK hooks with Rhinoceros
this is the image...
Really? I'm the first one to come up with this?
I know - you guys are being so helpful and all...sorry for the digression.

The effect is called ambient occlusion. I have used it in cinema4d and maxwell. Most advanced rendering packages have it. I don't know about flamingo.
here is the science behind it:
