Gyo, what type are you using now?

try...we have one in our office and i'd get broken tips occasionally but that's because i'm not being gentle with it. the dial on ours has become loose over the years (my boss has had it since the 80's) so it allows the pencil to wobble a bit.

For all backstriving pencil lovers, an antiquated danish architect firm has has has now finaly progressed old day's , Once and for all we need to get rid of this modern spetakularum called the computer, and progress back to the times ehen new thinking and innovation was not even invented -- grab the chancem finaly there are an investment it is offcaurse not in visionary newthinking or paragime shifts , let Denmark lead on cementing the arts in praising dead hero's and draw him the museum he thirst. ---

on the table next to me is a pencil drawing on trace, a jar of pencils, a scale ruler, and an erasing shield. no t-square, though.

perhaps Audels Carpenters and Builders Guide?

Father passed on all 4 volumes to me from great-gramps. Wonderful illustrations, glad I am not a carpenter.

I am so old that for me, it is drawing on linen in ink with a ruling pen and drop bow compass, and scraping my mistakes off of the linen with a razor blade.

And sliderules. French curves. scumbags (bags of ground up eraser you used so your inking triangle would roll on the linen) . Leroy lettering. Sepias.

We were so happy when we upgraded to Rapidographs and mylar!!

I think one thing that probably binds us across time, whether we were hunched over drafting boards or leaning in at computer screens is neck and shoulder pain

on a happier note, while I never used it in school or work (thus far), my grandfather who was a carpenter/contractor built me a wooden, table-top drafting board for my tenth birthday and gave me one of his old T-squares, which is simple, but adjusts to any angle. Even if I never use it, it's a beautiful relic and a reminder of those who came before me, personally and professionally.

The use of words like:

/w
bsmt,
stl
t/fdn =
b/fdn =
Mfgr.
ht
ca built

I use them only in texting now...

uhm I could be retarded or it could be a cultural thing but

what does stl, t/fdn, mfgr mean?

Feb 3, 10 12:16 am  ·

personally I don't use these, but I think they mean:

stl = steel
t/fdn = top of foundation
mfgr = manufacturer

plotter...

by the way, did you *old timers* ever use a pen plotter in architecture offices? i remember seeing one when i was a kid at my dad's office (not architecture) they used it to draw graphs and things: different color pens, and an arm that drafted the lines with the pens... something like a laser cutter or cnc but with pens attached...

I remember being sent to go see the new "pen plotter" and the first ink jet plotters by HP.

pen plotters .... I was in the early stages of my career when pen plotters were first introduced. My strongest memories of those devices were the demos at industry events, like AIA conventions.

There they'd sit, with pens zooming away, putting miles of ink on vellum, with a bunch of old gheezers standing around, wondering why their drafting staff couldn't lay down lines that fast. It never seemed to occur to thsse guys that somebody had spent hours drafting on a computer to get these plots files ready.
