Dear Members,

This is a pivotal year for the Chicago Architectural Club. It is a year we must all decide the Club's new mission. We must decide, as a club, the future of this organization and its responsibilities to its members and the greater community. In short, it is time for a change. As you can imagine, this is no small task; it will take more than this season to accomplish and for it to be successful the club will need the input and support of all of its members.

Before we move forward, it is important to understand the rich history of the Chicago Architectural Club as well as its evolution throughout the years. Did you know that the CAC was originally founded in 1885 and is the oldest architecture club in the country? Our first event will feature Wilbert Hasbrouck, of Prairie Avenue Bookshop, who will lead a discussion of the Club's history and present his forthcoming book, The Chicago Architectural Club: Prelude to the Modern. Additionally, Mr. Hasbrouck will participate in an open forum with attendees about the possible future directions of the Club.

The Club has traditionally spoken through two major outlets: the CAC Journal and our bi-annual Burnham Prize and Chicago Prize competitions. These traditions are at the core of the organization, but aspects of them may benefit from being updated. Additionally, we will be proposing a heightened online presence for the Club in the form of a new website which more actively engages the members as well as the greater architectural community. This online resource, with forums, current news and events, and member's essays will increase the Club's visibility and range. We also look forward to partnering with other great architectural organizations throughout the city for events and membership. Finally, we will work to create a Club Advisory Board, comprised of seminal members of the city's cultural institutions, to help shape a collective vision for the future of the club.

This year begins with a survey that will give you a direct voice as to what you think the Club should offer and what the Club's mission should be. Our challenge as architects is to help shape the future of the physical world; our challenge within the CAC is to create a healthy future for our vibrant, interesting, and diverse organization. Together, we will all decide the future of this organization that is so vital to the city and its architects.
