Whats faster 64bit single core or 32bit dual core?

ff33º

I have two machines...

1. a single 64 AMD ,.w/ old board..so i cant upgrade to a Dual

2.A 32 bit dual core Intel..I wou'd upgrade , but I am thinking 64 bit is better for the future.

THIRD OPTION: I am trying to figure out if I should just go get all hooked up wth teh new Quad, which also means a new board ( 200$-amd phenom w/ 100$ -board,..and possibly new ram)....or if one of my two machines will be fine with an upgrade.

Lately I my projects warrant more horsepower...so I need to do something fast

Well, I think without more details of what specific CPUs you're asking us to compare it is hard to give a definite answer, but if the Intel dualcore is a more recent design it'll probably outpace the AMD option.

The thing to keep in mind WRT 32bit vs 64bit is not per se speed, but obviously the fundamental chip design/generation and most importantly that with 64bit you will, given an OS that supports it, be able to address +4Gb of RAM for a single process/thread/app.

So, if you wanted run PS and have 8Gb installed and you wanted to access the RAM (actually the 32bit Windows limit is something like 3.5Gb) you'd definately want a 64bit design w/ 64bit OS.

Does that make sense? Don't compare apples with pears basically...

Sorry, misread your post - you HAVE several machines and are not comparing options. My bad.
HW is so cheap these days...Just get the latest shit and let your projects benefit.

In any case, my statement about 32bit vs 64bit still stands...

I found a barebones QUAD setup for 400$ today..so you right about HW

You'll need the 64bit versions of the software to get the most benefits.

I personally like the easiest path and would just do nothing until you can afford to get new everything, at which point you go full 64bit.
That's just me, though, I hate opening my computers.

I'd aim for optimum compatibility, etc.

I do know one thing. 64x as aexotic an os as it is, ...is still better than Vista anyday

yup, Vista sucks. I've got one machine that is stuck with it and I swear it is half the speed of XP (and I've got Aero and the other crap turned off).

Very frustrating.
