Hi, I'm new to the architecture field and I have just begun my first studio, how do students typically begin the model making process, what types of tools & materials would you say work best. Any techniques or modeling secrets, and what scale is best for a 12x12x12 envelope? Any websites that specialize in model making? What about software, would you recommend any 3D modeling programs to use? can you using them with a laser cutter so that the appropriate shapes and sizes are created?
also, for an envelope that small i would build at 1/2" = 1'0", giving you a six inch cube. this will allow for layered details as small as 1.5" if you are using single-ply chipboard.
I found that you can make a model pretty much out of anything, from foam to wood to wire, to buttons and nails and paper cups and gauze. .. Seriously, ANYTHING.
just stay in scale and make it look good.
How you do that doesn't matter.
As far as soft goes - 3D max and Rhino are personal favorites, though I am on a PC, which makes it easier - you don't have to run Rhino through parallels.
Don't worry about the laser cuter - you probably won't be allowed anywhere NEAR it until your fourth or fifth studio. At least that's how it is in Berkeley.
Guide to Making a Model???
