Physical modeling with lighting

hurleycowboy

If anyone has ever attempted a regular basswood model that has lights in the interior please give me some tips on what kind of hardware to use etc. Keep it economical haha. Thanks and if you have pictures that'd be great. I appreciate the input.

did you try using christmas lights? i don't know,. . . never tried to do such a thing, but i think it would look much better graphically on paper than it would in physical form. not to tell you to stay away from putting lights in the model, but do it and take pictures of it with the lights inside and alter the graphics with photoshop or illustrator. . .

christmas lights work the best but be careful as they do get hot when left on too long. you don't want your model and/or studio going up in flames. adjusting the photos is ps or illustrator is a good idea for portfolio or pres work, but it makes for a nice bit of flash in a stand-up presentation. good luck

Make the bottom/base/podium of model a piece of plastic and place light source under that. You can get mini flourescent/incandascent lights at Home Depot. This is good so if the jurors look inside they don't see a jumble of green wires and Christmas lights. It is fairly cheap. I paid $5 for my light and I can use it over and over. It just requires more labor on the model-making side of things. You are also less likely to send your model up in flames. If you are super fancy, you can get a light that dims so you can find a better light setting.

Good luck.

i've used a really small, coleman camping halogen light (around 5-10 bucks) that is about 3 inches long and has a flexible end. picked it up at target, so i'm assuming wide availability. we either just position it in the model (if big enough), out of the view angle or drill a 1/4" hole in the bottom of the rooms we want to light up.

Use white LED's. Can get them at RadioShack or any other electronic shop. they dont get hot and will last a long time.

You will need to get a small transformer to run the lights (much like the kind that your discman, etc uses). 3volt, 700mA should work fine.

Use speaker cable or the copper foil that people use for stained glass as wiring. Dont worry about the exposed wiring starting a fire, becuase it wont with such a low voltage. You do, however, have to make sure that you dont let your two wire touch or else you will short out your lighting.

With LED's, one of the leads is + and one is -. Make sure that when wiring the LED's, you get the leads hooked up correctly. If not, only certain LED's will come on.
