Rhino Question: How to erase Duplicate Faces?

ff33º

Duplicate faces- I have a complex mesh that I extracted faces from. Only when I went to render it I discovered I accidently copied it onto itself, so tehre are like thress faces to every single facet.

I a wondering if there a way delete all ( like 32000+) DUPLICATE FACES, ..without selecting each one.

MMatt, thanks ...

hmm...actually they aren't duplicates but the backs to each other ...so my mesh has two sides: fr and back.....which I am confused as to how to fix.

well here is what I have

1. a custom mesh I constructed a while ago
2. I used MeshtoNURB to be able to apply materials to particular facets ..er surfaces
3. I exploded it to like 11500 surfaces...except when I exploded there are also the backsides that are screwing me up

I just want a shell..with no "backsides"

any thoughts

oh shit..I just found this warning ( written in red) in the Command Help bar for MeshToNURB:

"Warning
This Command converts each polygon face to a NURBS surface. It is not meant to convert entire mesh models to NURBS models and there is, in fact, no simple way to accomplish this."

Hmmm... if they are the backfaces they should still get caught by SelDup, no? Unless your mesh had thickness before you blew it apart.

Another option might be to basically start over again by draping the mesh (or your giant pile of surfaces), trimming the drape, and working off of that geometry instead.

Or you could bring all of those surfaces into another program which allows you to "grow" your selection set. Maya does it nicely. Then you'd have to select a piece in the middle of the backside and grow the selection until you wrap to the edges. I don't think Rhino lets you grow a selection set.

Can I make a mesh with no thickness..I think that is what I did..

I'll try the drape.

Without seeing the model and knowing what effecct you are trying to achieve in the rendering....

Depending on the rendering program (if you are using Vray) you might also be able to just up your "secondary ray bias" and all the intersecting meshes won't interfere with the look. They have to be coplanar for that to work, but it might be a quicker solution.

Thanks FOG,

I am using VRAY.

Well, without belaboring the description of my project..

it is essentially a "tesselated balloon"..and I am trying to apply a single material to each facet. Some panels woudl be glass, some aluminum..etc.

I am going for the geometric look..not a smooth one..so I was hoping to be able select certain surfaces place them on a layer.,...apply a VRAY material to the respective layers....

right now..the "backsides" are messing things up...they show through in the rendering...

So I guess wish I had one sided shell of seperate faces.

Thanks again for you advice.

Hmmm, tesselated balloon...

I'd just hit that balloon with a Voronoi script or something like it. Check over at the Rhino4 Labs to download some scripts to play with.

Thanks again FOG..
I tried those before

I think I am getting the hang of it...it has more to do with me ..admittedly, getting to know the difference between NURBS , surfaces and solids.

So when you guys have questions, what is your favorate RHINO forum?

I use outlook express to read the Rhino forums that you can find over here:

http://www.rhino3d.com/support.htm

Generally these get same day responses and often from the people at McNeel who are developing the project.
