"Is there anybody out there?" Do we have anyone out there that has a pretty good understanding of Revit? - I have a pretty complex problem w/ a family and was wondering if anyone could throw a bone my way? I could email you my family and screenhots since I cant upload here on the forum. I have already tried the AUGI and Revitcity Forums with no luck at all.
So...my problem.....
OK - so Ive been trying to figure out this parametric corner angle biznez but have been unsuccessful...
Here were my steps to try and make this corner baluster-panel family.....
1-Opened the original Baluster-panel family"test_2"...save as "test_angle"
2-Open original "test_2" Baluster-panel family....File>Load from Library>Load family>select "test_angle" file
3-In the project browser I went to groups>model>"test angle" - dragged the file into the project and placed it at the proper location.
4-rotated it slightly 45degrees - place ref. lines at the inside of each post...locked them to the extrusion...placed an angular dimension...created a parameter called "Corner Angle"
5-On the far left toolbar I selected family types and changed the value of the "corner angle" click OK...and I get an error message.
-Where have I gone wrong in this creation - why do I get an error message saying that the constraints are not satisfied?
When I unlocked the ref. line from the geometry moved the imported family away from the ref. line and change the "corner angle" ............it changed the angle of the ref. line perfectly....but as soon as I placed the geometry on the ref. line and tried to change the "corner angle" I got the "constraints are not satisfied" again! So I dont know what is going on right now!
Not that anyone really cares......but I've got it! Or pretty damn close to it. So basically when you have the nested family in your new family you have to edit the group and then place in the ref plane...lock it and finish the group. Add in your angular dimension, create the parameter...presto - angular parameter!!!!!Wahooo!!!
The only jam I ran into was when I tried to change the width of one of the panels...it moved from the wrong direction...I wanted the post to be locked down into its position and the other side of the panel to adjust...so what I did was pin down the post and it worked....BUT now the nested panel doesn't rotate on the corner angle.....Sooooooo my solution when I need to adjust the panel width is to pin the post...and when I need to change the angle I un-pin the post. Attached is my finished Corner Baluster-Panel Family.
- My other small issue is that in order for me to change the width of the nested family I have to open the actual nested file and change the parameters...I'm having issues with adding parameters to a group. But it works...could be a little bit better...but it works!
If anyone has a solution to the pin/unpin deal please let me know. Thanks!
My college dayz are over my friend...and all my pics have been confiscated. I know I have one lurking around in my laptop somewhere...ill post it up when I have another revit problem. LOL!
Are you using this for stairs? or just for a 'flat' railing?
The curtain wall tool works great for regular flat 'railings'... corners clean up well, panels can be overridden, and slight changes are much easier to make when the you need to take off a few more inches down the road.
Someone beat me to the punch on the AUGI board, but by establishing reference planes and checking the "defines origin" box, you determine where the object flexes from, no pins necessary.

na just a flat railing...but its a pretty complex railing family...and once I have figured this out...I should be able to build almost anything in Revit...Thanks though.
Yeah - just got that post reguarding defining the origin..thanks all
-stay tuned for strip beer pong pics
