Do we need part 3?

Hi all,

I am currently an M.Arch student doing a project on our options after graduation. We are discussing alternative options to finding a job and building up experiences to do part 3. In the current economic climate it is very hard to find a job. Many architects advertise positions that require 3-5+ years experience. Even after 7+ years in and out of education with a part 3 your not guarantied a job. As such what alturnative options does a part 2 graduate have. We want to start a discussion around the need for part 3 and and as such the future of the 'architect'. As the profession is changing should our route into work change with it? For example there is the rise of the 'indie architects', indepentent  professional who develop the project from start to finish rather than waiting for a client to come to them. They find the site, develop the program, find investors and get it built. They are essentially making a business model.

Should the nature of the architects practices change as well? The standard model seems to be a company that hires and fires people as and when the work comes in but the director are still taking home £200,000+. We are not stay they haven't work their way into their position but is there and different way of doing things? what do you think?

Do we need a part 3?

What other routes can we take to get work?

How do you see the role of the architect in the future?

What do you think about the way practices are run?

We want to start a discussion so any and all comments are welcome.

David
